I just took the ASTB two weeks ago and got similar scores. I certainly need improvement on the math portion of the OAR. how are you studying for it?

I actually thought the math was the easiest part, i know for a fact my OAR was low because i missed a good amount of the mechanical section and maybe few on verbal.

For me there where a lot of cube number type problem, sequence problems, and multiplying and dividing problems and probability. I think the easiest problems made you use the formulas on the side so it was just a plug and play problem.

As far as practice goes, i would keep doing multiplication and division problems by hand so even if i forgot lets say the cube of 6 or i wold just do 6x6x6 by hand. I wrote down close to 90 percent of the problems i was given to make sure i was right. The only obvious ones i got where something along of the lines of "In a bag that contain 5 blue and 5 red marbles what are your chances of drawing a red marble?". However i read some people got log problems but i never got one.

I also used Barron's book and the online tests from paterson. They where pretty spot on as far as the questions went.

My GPA is a lost cause, I graduated last May. I know it's pretty bad, but my recruiter thinks we can overcome it. Just trying to figure out if these scores are high enough to make up for most of it.
I also have a degree in CS with a low GPA 2.22, my requiter said the min for aviatiors is a 2.0. We just need a strong package and good ASTB scores. I haven't taken my ASTB yet, I take that this upcoming Monday. What I do have going for me is that I have been working the last 4 years in DoD Cyber so that's a strong skillset I have to offer.

No it’s not. The min for Pilot/NFO is a 2.5. Also Aviation boards don’t care what work experience you have.

Pretty sure your OR is looking at the old PA

Hello Everyone,
I took my ASTB today and it went alright, I want to thank you all for the information posted here.
In terms of the exam itself, the math portion of it was not as hard as I thought it would be, the hardest problems I got were relating to simplifying fractions with negative exponents. You should definitely be comfortable with algebra and basic arithmetic operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing decimals). There were some ratio problems and also some geometry problem that gave you the radius and asked to find the circumference.
The reading part was tougher than expected, I struggled with a few questions because multiple answers seemed right. Although, you have plenty of time to read the paragraph thoroughly so don't stress the time too much.
The mechanical part was my worst, I didn't know most of the questions and frankly, I can't even recall half of them and I also ran out of time.
The aviation knowledge part had many questions about specific names of airplanes that can be used or were used for a specific situation. I didn't study much for this so I just guessed for most of those. Def keep in mind lift, trust, weight, drag as well as pitch, yaw, and roll.
The spatial perception was my personal best as I used a tricked I learned on a youtube video I watched
Lastly, the flight simulation was by far the hardest part for me as I am not a big video game player, it took me a while to adjust to the controllers and I kept forgetting that up was down and vice-versa yet left was still left and right was right.

My recruiter told me I have an 80% chance of getting picked up for NFO, even though my aviation scores were not great. I would like to get a second opinion from members of this community. I'm also very interested in applying for IP, CWO, METOC, IO. In what area do you guys think I have a better chance of getting picked up?

Thanks!

You’re not qualified for either Pilot or NFO.

You need a 4 on the first part and a 5 on the category of aviation you are applying for, whether its SNA or SNFO. That will let you meet the minimums. I would not ballpark that to be 80% likely though. So it has to be 4, X, 5 minimum for SNFO.

Was this your 1st attempt, if I recall correctly if you're shooting for the July board, you should still have enough time for a retake.

I would assume that the compass part plays a big part for NFO and the joystick plays less of a role (just guessing) but did you use the flashcards that can help with the directions?

I did use them and I did very well on that part, I only missed two out of the 40+ that were given. I used a technique I found on youtube. Here's the link to the video

How fast would you say you answered on those questions? Particularly the ones that are angled.
