The IRR plan blows guys, but the Marine and Air Force ROTCs have been doing it for a while. You're lucky if you can still get into the club at all these days- my brother's a pretty solid dude, but he came to play too late and now can't even get an OCS slot.
A4s, did you change your stuff out with Wolff hardware? How did it work out?
My springs are due for retirement -- I'm a little hesitant to use non-factory gear, but this sounds like a good option.
Mike- unfortunately, you can't select NECC out of ROTC. I don't know how it works for other communities, but as a SWO you'll have the opportunity to do a NECC tour as your second divo tour. I think there are also opportunities to go there as a department head but I don't know anything about them.
Stay in your lane (wrt VBSS). I'm assuming your experience consists of TBS and Primary. Nothing against that, but you're not an authority on "being shot at" or MIO.
So you stand duty in flight school and that gives you a "general...10%" understanding of how a squadron works? Rog...
OK all AMDO jokes aside, how on earth do you get shore duty working on your masters at ASU? GEV? That's got to be the best deal in the Navy.
Oh, and go fvck yourself...
If you're going to upgrade your mags ($75), you might as well upgrade your holster ($100), your boots ($150), your optics ($500), your stateroom mattress, etc, etc. Some guys do it- it's their money. It's just not a habit I want to get into.
^What he said. Buying stuff out of pocket is a slippery slope. If I were a ground pounder getting into firefights with some frequency I might be singing a different tune.
You'd be surprised.
There you go, I completely agree. The "fighting" is really left to the department heads who get a lot more training. Still, there's no doubt that the lack in basic seamanship and training is what leads to a lot of the groundings and collisions we have. You can literally...
Still, my original point was the same one a sub dude made in a thread I was reading yesterday. He commented on how after his year and a half of nuke school he still didn't understand routine paperwork given to him by one of his guys.
All the operational training makes great pilots, reactor...
I see what you mean. "Leading" a division is probably a misnomer; doesn't change my original point.
BigIron, you're talking divo 'leadership' vs. real world mission leadership- there's clearly no comparison.
I doubt anyone would care, but I'm not into spending my money at work. At the schoolhouse I burned 1k+ rds through the M4 using their worn .gov mags without an issue. Doesn't mean they don't break though. Doesn't mean magpulls don't ever fail either. That's why we carry a pistol.
How is a pilot LT who spends his first four years in the Navy in flight school, RAG, and then being Coffee Mess Officer going to be better off when he takes over his first division?
Don't get me wrong, there are lots of things wrong with my community but lack of leadership experience isn't one...
Don't worry too much about when you go to "baby SWOS." Even with 3 weeks of moboards and rules of the road, you'll still be totally clueless when you show up and are expected to run a division.
Be humble, ready to work, ready to learn, and never make the same mistake twice.
PM me with any...
You're absolutely right, this program is clearly an incentive to keep servicemembers in. I think that if you want to put money towards retention, give it to people in uniform.
There are single sailors who are unable to take advantage of this program (and aren't entitled to this $$$) simply...
I didn't even know this existed, but it seems retarded. I can understand receiving certain benefits (ie health care) for happening to be married to a servicemember, but come on...
Even if you go to school, you still have to get your fleet cherry popped at some point. SUPPOs spend 6 months in school before coming to the boat and they still have that clueless, deer in the headlights look when they check onboard just like everyone else.
Bottom line, act like an officer and...
Again, I'll straying into territory that I'm by no means an expert on. For a SECRET they'll generally just read your SF86 and the run a NACLC and credit check (this is open source info). It's not as comprehensive as you think and I can't imagine they would know about or care about this issue...
Seafort, as others have hinted at, the Navy isn't nearly as organized or connected as most on the outside would think. I have no idea if your college program "service record" exists somewhere; I doubt it. Being in ROTC you never have a real Navy service record, but that's beside the point...
To echo everyone else, smoking MJ twice in high school is not an issue. Lying on the ROTC paperwork is obviously a crime but it will not be an issue for your application process. If you go on to try to get into law enforcement or some crazy high security clearance you'd definitely have some...
Since you posted in the SWO forum, I'm assuming you are asking as a SWO Ensign. I'm guessing life as on O3 on the carrier is better than for a JO on a smaller ship but I don't know. I'm sure one of them will chime in.
Living quarters will depend somewhat on what type of ship you're on. Since...
Our upcoming deployment is scheduled for 8 months. They also have these neat things called surge deployments, where you go on a regular (6+ month) deployment, come back for a few months, then leave again for several more months.
While somewhat rare, I knew a STA-21 guy that had been to mast a handful of times. I think he ended up figuring out a way to get one or two of them expunged or something. Don't remember the details but to answer your question, mast isn't an automatic disqualifier as long as some time has...
^ Ha, so says one of the most bitter dudes in the Navy.
Recommend you go somewhere that you'll have fun and be near friends/family. Wherever you go, have a positive attitude, don't be a tool, and you'll be alright.
Even if he were 22 the chances would be very slim. The SWO community is really hurting for bodies right now so, unfortunately, his chances of getting "released" from SWO aren't good.
I'm in Newport right now and I'd be happy to get lunch with him and shoot the shit about the goods and bads of...
That's great man. Lots of Mids (myself included) come in and fail or suck at calc and physics. If you've already knocked those courses out you're a safer bet for them. My only word of caution, 90% of the time common classes like those will transfer to a 4-yr college; not sure how it works for...
Yeah, show me what BDCP...I'm enlisted...but I've never been to boot camp...made up rank insignia looks like.
I mean, if you don't know enough to realize how gay it would be and if you don't understand the difference between you and a Mid/OC, that's OK at this point. Just trust me on this one.
Quick reality check for the BDCP guys: wearing an officer's uniform as an enlisted guy- which you are until you finish OCS- is a serious offense (read: it's a crime). No different than that fat slob that was walking around dressed as a Marine colonel at his high school reunion.
There's two types in the Navy:
Surface SAR Swimmer- regular boat dude with a full time job. If someone falls overboard you run and change into a wetsuit, dive in, and pull them out. The training is a month long and you won't be trained to deploy from a helo.
Aviation SAR Swimmer- Pretty...
What job do you want to do in the CG? I ask because just about anything you do in the CG can be done in the Navy too. You can get into your desired community in the Navy then try to transfer down the road. It's not guaranteed but your chances are probably better that way than applying with no...
FoF- without any firsthand knowledge, I think you're crediting NASA- in its current form- with a much bigger role in national defense than it really has. As MIDNJAC pointed out, I'm sure the effects of this have already been pondered by people in the know.
If you want to be an interstellar...
I'm not sure that's true. Granted, the nukes don't want someone in their community who doesn't want to be there but at the end of the day I think they can order you to go wherever they want...technically.
Realistically, most people who really want a flight slot end up getting one at the end of...
Ya they're pretty tough motha's. Every time I see that discovery show about BUD/S I can't help imagine how it must suck about a hundred times worse than it looks in the tv box.
Ya no kidding, I read an old thread on there recently where you were trying to convince them that being a Navy pilot is a lot like being a SEAL. Good stuff.
I went in for a physical once (either USNA or ROTC initial) and had a sky high blood pressure as a very fit 18 yr old water polo player. I'd just stuffed my face with fast food and a soda right before the physical. That coupled with being a little apprehensive about the physical shot my BP...
Absolutely, lots of people f**k away those fall grades since not many colleges ask for them. Not a big deal but if you've done well (above your avg GPA) you'll likely set yourself apart.
Forgot to mention earlier that "Tier 1/2" majors are a big deal now. If you're not applying as a...
Will, for what it's worth, if you were in the "hell no" category they probably would have let you know already. If you keep getting rolled month to month it means you're competitive and still in the game. Don't stress, it's all out of your hands now*. Good luck with selection.
*If you've got...
