    Forward Air Controller

If you are working ahead of your career timetable, you will have no problem getting a FAC tour. Some FAC tours are more infantry than others; you'll have many years to figure all that out, especially if you're a fixed wing guy. Some FAC tours like with ANGLICO allow a mid our senior captain to...

    Meridian HDTV

DirecTV was always leading the way in HD programming until Dish bought out the HD only sat company VOOM. Today, technically Dish (w/ HD and VOOM pkg) has more HD channels, but Direct has ESPN2HD and Universal HD plus over 100 NFL games per year in HD if you elect to purchase Sunday Tick. Note...

Fight's On! The origins of TOPGUN and dogfights back in the day/future prospects

Man, didn't think we'd stir this much emotion from this thread and the previous thread. . good stuff. I think we can definitely save the facts and figures for a less-open forum (multi-platform exercises, schools, the "quiet mumblings" in the back of the O club). . . . The concept that a few...

Look here for NAS Meridian pics.

Of course having an airborne radar w/ CIT can give you all the TCAS info on other birds without giving your info to the network. For the curious: http://www.fas.org/irp/program/security/_work/kiv-6.html

    FRS's and Possible Duty Stations

Phase array radar? I can't even get an APG-73. Any strike-fighter guy in a CVW will tell you (as they continue to tell me) the importance of BFM. No, we haven't had much of an air to air tally sheet since Vietnam. I'm not going to preach the threats out there and what they are . . we can all...

    FRS's and Possible Duty Stations

and really .. . it was really never about the platforms (Okay, well gotta defend the JV commentary); more about the attitudes. I was curious to see some of the takes from Rhino guys about their F-14 brothers.

Saltier Marines - what's your best advice for a brand new 2ndLt?

When your SPC asks, "If the Corps didn't have aviation, would you be here?" Try to have something more clever in mind than, "I doubt it." That and putting 0302 last on my virtual selection sheet got all the Infantry SPCs all excited. We never really got along after that. . . . . .
  9. R

    FRS's and Possible Duty Stations

I can't really help you if you don't get it. It's that the Tomcat crew went from a formidable A/A platform. A few of them are bitter--deer in the headlights in a debrief when the "JV guys" kill remove them after 180 degrees of turn. . . .Wait a minute. Wasn't this platform suppose to be an...

    apartments in San Diego

Tali's getting married? Craziness. Welcome to SD. La Mirage is nice enough--couple pilots have had a few mngmt hassles (they can be a little unorganized), but nothing major. I for one like PB, but then I drink a lot more than you (and your quiet married life)--and as it's been said maybe a...

    API vs Primary

i think the biggest problems you will have in your flight training involve the time off. Time off for a new platform (first couple months of primary, advanced, or FRS) may be like a week. After a couple hundred hours in a fleet squadron maybe it's a bit more. .Not flying for three weeks or so in...

    FRS's and Possible Duty Stations

Are you kidding me? An F-18F with a fair fuel load and no ordnance will get spanked hard by an F-18C with -402s. This is not debateable. It is fact. I've seen the "airshows" where the Rhinos go 10 miles behind the ship at 20k and try to go supersonic and miss. Pretty ridiculous.

    FBI lat transfer

The hardest thing about getting into the FBI post 9-11 is luck and timing. For example, unless you are a language specialist, the most competitive applicant is an intel weenie. An intel background can get you short listed; even then, the time from initial application to your time at the FBI...

    FRS's and Possible Duty Stations

Aww come on. That would take all the fun out of ensuring a jet candidate outscored his rotor peers. . .
  18. R

    Contact Lens Waiver

I'm certainly not in the loop, but I've never heard of a contact lens waiver. I've never strapped an ejection seat on without contacts. Just need your CO to sign off on them. As far as NAMI, you still need the uncorrected standard, last I checked it was 20/40 correctable with glasses or contacts...

    Feeling out the Goshawk

UINavy hit the nail. For landing gives a great graphical VSI --that's about it. VV is a good piece of gear and every a/c you can select has got one save a few prowlers. It isn't that you can't fly without it, you just get used to using it. That's why you'll never launch off the boat and never...

    PLC Air Age Waiver??

There is no API cutoff that I've ever heard of. It is 27.5 when you get commissioned. Yeah, the Marine Col I spoke with told me about a study the Corps did about attrition rates and age, family all kinds of stuff. It was ugly for us old guys. Can't argue facts .. I guess.

    PLC Air Age Waiver??

In the past, the Navy has always been more strict on age. But, with prior military service they will give a waiver; I think it's 24 or 36 months worth. It's in the past couple weeks somewhere on this site. Surely you can find a way to get graduated a little earlier? 19 credits? summer school?

    T-34 Fuel Quantity Indicators

chuckle. . yeah tactics .. and the 'naughty' systems. . .I certainly don't 'study' capacitance-type fuel indicators! Just a EE with a passing interest in gen av.. considered getting my A&P, but then I punched myself in the gut and cracked open a Tacman and a Schlitz.
  25. R

    PLC Air Age Waiver??

Man I think you're in big trouble. Can you do summer school? I know the Marines have gotten real strict on age for aviators. I'm not for certain. .but . . if there's anyway your expected date can be prior to 27.5 ? Your OSO might know more. I didn't see an official Maradmin or anything like that...

    T-34 Fuel Quantity Indicators

You were easy on me. .lol. Okay well that explanation works but it's really permittivity and not resistance. But for all practical purposes the analogy works.. Oh and just two tubes. . . . Incidentally many low power circuits have plenty of AC crap on them. Like any IR remote control (and...

    T-34 Fuel Quantity Indicators

yeah good point. . the fuel indicating system is completely 28 VDC. .hmmm. . Obviously you can't send DC through a capacitor (you get an open circuit). . so not sure how it measures the capacitance from the changing fuel/air dielectric without some sort of AC signal. . We're talking about a very...

    T-34 Fuel Quantity Indicators

I think so. . I little dry, but it makes sense to me. . . capacitance type meaning an AC signal is sent from one "plate" to another usually cocentric metal tubes in a probe. The "dielctric" is the fuel, or more accurate the fuel / air mixture (as fuel is burned becomes more air). Basic...

    New Navy Uniforms Announced

they mean that the new uniform if/when approved will be worn in lieu of the aviation green uniform worn by plane captains and others. That's the theory anyways. Rest assured there aren't any proposals on the table for aircrew flight suits.

    usmc jets

I think the point was the "jet" comment. The odds of a helo guy flying a tactical jet in the military are very low. The odds of a jet guy flying a helo are also low, but possible. You would know better than me 46D, but aren't they taking a couple jets guys per year for Osprey Transistions? I...
