    Disassociated Sea Tour Likelihood

Huh, I was OCONUS but was emailing my detailer asking about it in 2019 and I remember something along the lines of "The email suffices as your notice" since the MILPERSMAN was from mid-2000s.

    Disassociated Sea Tour Likelihood

It used to be an actual letter, now I believe it's an email and then the NSIPS resignation request. As others have said, coordinate with your XO and call now. Unfortunately, you hold none of the cards here, which sucks.

    Disassociated Sea Tour Likelihood

Unfortunately if you fall within their current rules, you'll get zero sympathy from PERS. Their #1 job is to get you to a sea duty job, regardless of your individual situations. As @DanMa1156 mentioned, once you get clarification, picking something palatable early is probably the best option.

https://www.dvidshub.net/video/905736/joint-operations-foward-arming-and-refueling-point-blivet-drop However, if it got to this, the USAF or USMC package might be the better candidate, depending on Time/Speed/Distance from the problem. DDG or other ship as a "Lilly pad" was always our first go...

    Which watch?

I lasted maybe 6 months using my favorite Zebra pens in the planes. I forgot half a dozen or so, and now just use hotel pens. On the plus side, the international pens are much better than the Mk1Mod0 Bic piece of shit I saw on regional layovers in South Bend or whatever.

    Navy Dedicated SAR Squadrons

I think you're thinking too literally about CSAR as one scenario. There's a big spectrum of threat levels and time space, and each service (Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force, USMC) has some parts to play in the puzzle. Unfortunately, as others we've often mentioned, the HS/HC merger, HCS's...

    Navy Dedicated SAR Squadrons

Circling back to this. A couple points: -Don't go to Guam just because you want to "do SAR". Yes they do stand SAR Alert and get more rescues. However, it's an island in the pacific (good and bad, but isolating), their deployments are different, and you're (for better or worse) far away from...

    Europe under extreme duress

Also goes back to doctrine. In Soviet doctrine, artillery is/was the “king of the battlefield”. Ukraine inherited that legacy in terms of systems and some doctrine. Fun fact: I read the battle of Hostomel Airport was supported by artillery units from the Ukrainian army’s school house, and...

NEWS Tesla Autopilot and similar automated driving systems get poor rating from prominent safety group

On the TPMS front, I actually like it. My wife drives city streets to work and drives through some interesting areas. So she picks up debris often enough (including a .38 casing once!) that we usually find out via TPMS first and can get it repaired before she winds up with a flat at 8pm in the...

    Making O5 in the reserves

My string of (by choice) P FITREPS hopefully ensures my tenure at a terminal O4 in a relatively good deal reserve job. The prestige of three big stripes and a little more scratch isn't worth the asspain. Watching a previous unit CO get burned out commuting from PCola to Great Lakes on his own...

    Making O5 in the reserves

Be careful what you wish for. Making O5 is potentially a worse deal since you'll be forced to get an over-grade waiver to stay flying, go to an APPLY billet as a CO/OIC and be on the hook for some of your travel, or join a large staff.

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

Granted it's been 8 years (ugh, I'm old) since I touched a -60, but my recollection of ground turns and hover vibes were they weren't magically difficult. I'm also scarred by spending 0300-0600 as an FCP doing ground turns on the boat to pass to another FCP at daylight for inflight. I think...

Put me in the camp of "Not an Ace" since drones/cruise missiles can't shoot back, but by all means paint that shit on the side of your Harrier and give my man a **DFC (knocked down to a silver star since the USMC hates awards). **Edit: Silver Star greater than a DFC apparently. FUBIJAR.

    FNAEB outcomes

No. Most of the NFO to 121 tracks I’ve seen involved civilian flight training, then part 91/135 to get to normal ATP mins. Had a VFA NFO in my Skywest indoc who did it, mostly with GI Bill and then flew king airs. I think contract ISR since he had a clearance?

    FNAEB outcomes

I’ll echo what @cfam said almost 100%. I’m assuming if it’s a FNAEB then you’re winged and in the FRS or first fleet squadron. I’ve known plenty of pilots who went through FNAEBs for not making HAC/PPC/section lead/sucking behind the boat. You’re being cagey, I guess I respect that. My...

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

I think people are underestimating the usefulness of manned platforms in ASW in particular. It’s not just a sensor platform. The unmanned sensors will give cueing, but dropping a torpedo is act of war stuff you don’t want to leave to an algorithm.

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

I think there's opportunity to move forward a generation, but as mentioned, it would need to be financed by Uncle Sam. Bell and Sikorsky put too much money into FVL that likely won't see full adoption (just my speculation), so they aren't going out on a limb without a money parachute. Any Hawk...

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

As @thump said, all the SHP increase in the world won’t get you a ton more a Sea Level. The up-engined SOAR birds needed it to work in high/hot/humid conditions we just don't see off boats. I'd love to see a S-92 variant that could fit in a DDG hangar (the big brains at Sikorsky and PMA know...

    Romeos Vs. Sierras

Can you expound on this? I left the fleet in 2016 for a VT IP tour and haven't been back, now firmly in the 121 world. I just see from afar as we decomm Exped squadrons and trim CVN squadrons to make deck space for F-35s and UAVs. Oh and whatever idiocy happened with Firescout.

We had our turn as a long distance military landlord and ended up selling it. Too much headache and we wanted the equity to buy our primary home. Paying a property manager 8-10% off the top would've killed any profit, so it was out of the question and we self managed. The time to buy real...

UAS and cUAS is going to be an interesting game of chicken for the next decade, for sure. On the plus side, there's a hot war going on to test stuff in. On the V-247, considering how much the Navy has punted the FireScout into the fucking stands as a red headed stepchild, I'm skeptical. Same...

The "gouge" in the mid-2010s was FAA and VA couldn't talk, so a lot of people were very honest with the VA on discharge about stuff like PTSD and TBI to get 100%. Legit claims that were verified by civilian docs as part of the VA Claims process. But then they never reported it on their...

There’s a lingering stigma about the VA from the WWII/Korea/Vietnam/Desert Storm generation I’ve picked up on from my few stops at the VFW. I think the VA of the 80s/90s/2000s had a lot of issues, but also a “that’s for people who have nothing else” mentality. I’ve seen it go the other...
