No, that would be when they create a Chinese C-2. Of course, that might be the only COD flying in the future.

    AFI 36-3205

I think when most people say “NATOPS” they mean the specific operations manual for the T/M/S. My experience is that “thirty-seven ten” is much more commonly used to refer to the big NATOPS.

    P-8 overshoots runway in K-Bay

We have an RNAV Visual procedure to Rwy 4, but it’s not published (anymore) in FLIP. It’s pretty trippy since it requires an RF leg and a less than standard RNP value… while maintaining a visual. Apparently the VR guys wanted an RNAV Visual similar to what they get with their airline’s special...

High Finance or Aviation - Fearful of making a choice I will regret.

This tracks with my outsider experience to the financial world. Their concept of stress deals with sleepless nights, not life-or-death experiences. As for the ego part, maybe that’s why I don’t really care that they make millions more $ than me. It’s not like they’ve landed on a boat.

Trouble T and Non-Std Alternate symbols? (Instrument flying)

@miss1ng thanks for the explanation. One of the issues with alternates is that the FAA will publish what I call a contingent A NA. It will show up on a chart as a regular A but will include what otherwise is an A NA in the front matter of the FLIP/TPP book. Also, high procedures will not have an...

Trouble T and Non-Std Alternate symbols? (Instrument flying)

Thanks for the quick response. -Do they teach that the A symbol could lead to a contingent A NA (such as “NA when control tower closed.”)? -Why are Trouble Ts reviewed for a missed approach?

Trouble T and Non-Std Alternate symbols? (Instrument flying)

What is taught about the non-standard takeoff mins symbol? (i.e., the trouble T) What about the non-standard alternate symbol? I remember being taught that the Navy pretty much ignores the Trouble T that since we have our own takeoff mins. However, there is a lot more under the Non-Standard...

    PIC name on DD-1801s

My only counter to that logic is that you are not in the process of exercising your airman privileges when flying military. Assuming that you aren’t doing something criminal, it would be difficult for them to have the justification. I’m tempted to ask my FAA counterparts what they know about a...

    PIC name on DD-1801s

If you want me to ask the guy who puts that in the GP, I can. I’m pretty sure most of that section just references the ICAO verbiage for how to file. I’m also curious to hear if anyone, ever, had their FAA airman certificates suspended/revoked while flying a DoD aircraft. I don’t see how the...

    CMV-22B Osprey Rollout

The mission creep idea was always coming from the folks that wanted to sell more Ospreys. Every year at Hook, the good folks at Boeing would point out all of the wonderful missions the Osprey could do that the C-2A could not. (And it’s humorous that the article claims this: “There isn’t much...

CVN 70 F-35 ramp strike mishap report

I once flew a MEDEVAC where the patient had a brain aneurysm. We let the flight doc do some flying and became wide-eyed when she suddenly noticed the altimeter. When we showed her the cabin pressure (~4K) she didn’t seem too concerned. Of course, it would have been helpful to have known of any...

Air Force v.s. Navy Culture Differences

Air Force v.s. Navy Culture Differences

@ChuckMK23, I didn’t see your edit until just now. The fleet of Challenger aircraft are actually FAA birds. The flight check team consists of both former/active Air Force pilots and civilians. They work for both the USAF and FAA (and “wear” whichever hat is needed for the mission). It has got to...

Air Force v.s. Navy Culture Differences

@ChuckMK23, it would only happen ad hoc when a flight procedure needed extensive waivers for inclusion into FLIP. It is not documented to the same extent as mentioned in the AFMAN 11-230. I don't know if we have any of those currently in DoD FLIP. I asked a former NAVFIG TERPSter and received...

Air Force v.s. Navy Culture Differences

Air Force v.s. Navy Culture Differences

Reservists who use Jepp plates in their civilian flying tend to like using them for military flying. I think each have advantages and disadvantages. The whole point of DoD FLIP, going back to the 1960s, is to have the same format across US government charts. The FAA produces by far the majority...

Air Force v.s. Navy Culture Differences

I’m curious to hear your opinion on why you think Jepp is a better option, overseas but especially domestically. “The FAA has DAFIF for everything.“ -You have it the other way around. DAFIF is a DoD product. It includes all of the FAA data. “We had to do that at Whiting at one point because...

What Happens If You Can't Land on a Carrier?

We would sometimes do the same thing in the Mighty COD. Or we would just wait until we got to our hotel's wifi. Field Carrier Landing Practice is what you should google. It's already been mentioned here, but that's how pilots practice ashore for landing at the ship. It has purely to do with...

What Happens If You Can't Land on a Carrier?

Who gets winged before CQ? Or is this referring to the RAG or Fleet quals (but is in the training thread)? Otherwise Brett's answer is the cleanest: you get lots of practice. Haven’t figured out how they would be organized? There is already a squadron and a wing. I’m a little confused as to what the current discussion would entail. The only off-the-wall idea we considered was to have dets report to a numbered fleet rather than the CSG. The idea was that the fleet...

    T-6 Nav Computer data source?

...And I just received an answer. The T-6B uses Jeppesen and, for whatever reason, Jeppesen does not code any step-down fixes. Apparently it has to do with the system being so old that there just isn't enough memory for the number of waypoints. So with that said, good luck to everyone in Primary!

    T-6 Nav Computer data source?

It could be the case that the chart needs to have a "3 NM to RW14", but I have yet to determine that. I also have not heard of other approaches that have this issue, but... it could not be isolated to just this one. That's why I'm trying to find what data source the T-6B uses. I checked the...

    T-6 Nav Computer data source?

Does anyone know what the data source is for the T-6? Does it use DAFIF? Jeppesen? I'm hearing that certain step-down fixes are not showing up on RNAV (GPS) approaches. For example, Whiting-North ILS Z or RNAV (GPS) RWY 14 does not have JOHNC in the database. Anyone care to help??

If we are serious about word meanings, then perhaps we should make it understood that “man” is just the shortened form of both were-man (male) and wif-man (female). As such, it just means a person. There, problem solved.

What can a young aspiring aviator do to get ahead?

    CMV-22B Osprey Rollout

Let’s also face the reality of tacticool missions: you can’t do that and succeed at the COD mission. The COD requirements already are barely met by a 3 aircraft det. To add missions, you would need more aircraft, more crews, more maintenance teams, and more space on the ship. Just because an...
