F-35B/C Lightning II (Joint Strike Fighter)

I'm sure it will be similar to the harrier in that in can recover ashore however the pilot wants or as conditions dictate.

F-35B/C Lightning II (Joint Strike Fighter)

Is it me or does that look like a lot of rotation on STO? It looks like the that thing is going to tail strike everytime. Pretty awesome!

F-35B/C Lightning II (Joint Strike Fighter)

Well said. I wish the gator decks were operated a little differently when it comes to big picture power projection though. Operating them as small CVs would be highly effective when it comes to strike capability and power projection IMHO. Even more so when the F-35B comes online.

    AW laps itself again (C-130/F-16/A-10/CVN)

I love the A-10. I would jump at a chance to go fly one. But Harrier Dude is right, it's an aircraft with no future. There is a such thing as prohibitive interference when it comes to a threat environment and those threat systems that represent such interference are not just concepts on some...

Controller, airline crew suspended over incident in Florida skies

Where do you think a lot of those SWA captains come from? Possibly from the ranks of the highly skilled military aviator? Not that I agree with this situation in general, just saying that these guys may have had the backgrounds to feel marginally comfortable with this unusual task. That...

Follow on to Corpus, Whiting, Vance(!) What's the Deal?

If that is the case then I would be begging for Corpus. I lived in downtown Pensacola and it was awesome, some of the best nine months (API + primary) I've ever had, but there is nothing up by whiting. I went to advanced in kingsville and partied with a bunch of my multi engine guys in corpus...

Anatomy of a Tragedy: Air France 447

Interesting. A pitot static failure seemed to me like one of those emergencies that always happened to the other guy, until it didn't. Kingsville to El Paso, I'm -2 with an IP in the back. Lead has a stud up front, IP in the back as well. Leave krock in the late evening, uneventful climb to...

I would really like to know what this means. Especially coming from an E-6 guy. But maybe I'm reading into your post a bit too much.

F-35B/C Lightning II (Joint Strike Fighter)

It's called a section approach. Usually it's used to bring a wingman through the weather while maintaining section integrity or because of an emergency as you mentioned.

OK. TEAM. Who fired the missile near the SoCal OpArea?

Yeah, it was part of the Aerospace curriculum at Cal Poly Pomona. Made for some good times for the most part. We had a rocket one year go horizontal about twenty feet from the reviewing stands out at Lucernce Dry Lake. The school was very lucky that day that no one was hurt. It sure is funny...

OK. TEAM. Who fired the missile near the SoCal OpArea?

I honestly don't know where the school got motors like those but they were provided to students for certain courses.
  16. yodaears

OK. TEAM. Who fired the missile near the SoCal OpArea?

For anything above an E class motor you are suppose to notify the FAA. The rockets we launched in college were were K and L class motors which would put a four or five pound rocket and associated instrumentation apexing at about 60000 ft with a maximum attained mach number of somewhere between...

Amen to this. These guys must have an "in" with the FAA test maker if there is a such thing. Great service.

According to a brief we got at the FRS by a certain someone at the Pentagon close to the program the first production Bs are already on the line in Ft. Worth.

There will ALWAYS be an England ... ???

I would support some cuts too, especially if they concentrated on Strategic Air Command and wouldn't effect Navy/Marine Corps TACAIR. In all seriousness though I agree with your overall assessment.

BAE: Look ma, no control surfaces!

Yes to your AV-8 question. Our wing/control surfaces loses effectiveness at about 40 kts or so and then it's all puffers from there. I need to reread the article the again.

    Unusual Military Patches...funny and otherwise

My dad bought me a couple of patches when I was a kid visiting his old squadron (VF-32) and I found one of -32's old cruise patches again while doing a little cleaning. From what I understand, the CO of BIG E was not amused.

    REQUEST: Good aviation/military books

Sorry if it has been mentioned but Steven Pressfield's Killing Rommel. Historical fiction about the British Long Range Desert Groups in North Africa and their attempts at killing Rommel (big surprise). I didn't really enjoy much of his other stuff (I'm probably in the minority of Marines on...

F-35B/C Lightning II (Joint Strike Fighter)

Vis was definitely a factor in the A to B canopy redesign but more for hover vis. The vis in the B is awesome, it's like sitting in a fish bowl but just like everything else in A/C design nothing is free. The B took an aerodynamic penalty for having a big canopy as I'm sure the F-35 would.

F-35B/C Lightning II (Joint Strike Fighter)

Seriously Fog. I don't know what is back there that's so important they couldn't put a freaking window there instead, or maybe raise the cockpit six inches but I'm sure they had a reason. Computers fail, glass generally doesn't. I'm a big fan of the KISS principle in basic A/C design and then...

"Pilots Pull Rank, Declare Emergency At JFK (With Audio)"

Maybe they jumped the gun on the e-word. Maybe this captain is a total tool who just doesn't like x-winds. Maybe there was 42 other things going wrong with that jet. As its been stated, we just don't know. What gets me in a tickle is the way this ATC controller handled the situation...

Tons of questions, first post on the forum

Why don't you take a look at the academy website. I'm sure there's some good info on there. Also, there was a book written a couple of years ago called "The Naval Academy Candidate Book." Not sure how accurate it is but it might be something to look into, again I'm not a USNA grad. It's on...

Brandon, a general piece of advice that has helped me; never self-select out of ANY options. The academy is an option for you but you need to get going on that if you're a junior in HS. That's a pretty involved process. As I am not an academy grad, I'm really not the one to fill you in on the...

    Marine OCS dumb question...

Garrett, if you have been able to succeed at USD then the academics are not going to be a problem. Worry about being in good shape and good health because those are the things that will get you in trouble. OCS is a kick in the nuts but not because of the academics.

Fight's On! The origins of TOPGUN and dogfights back in the day/future prospects

I understand the difference is mainly a product of carrier operations. The F-18L was a program by Northrop back in the day to mod the hornet to compete with the F-16 on the export market and had comparable performance. The program was canceled but one of the mods was adapted by the Swiss AF on...
