The AF wants 18xx people... UAV pilots. Lots of opportunities there and it is growing. Have you looked at that?

The Air National Guard has three SAR Wings: Long Island, Moffett Field, and Anchorage. I believe all three fly the HC-130 and the HH-60G. With their A2A refueling capability, they can effect rescues as far as ~1,000 nm offshore.

It is not at all uncommon in the USAF for a new pilot that washes out of the fighter track to move to a crew aircraft... and be successful. I know several. Generally, if they tracked to a single-pilot aircraft, they did pretty well in pilot training and have more than adequate skill sets to...

Pretty much, yes. The early A-models flying out of Groom Lake were metal finish. Plus, we really need that 2-seater now, not in a few months.

Probably none. The jet was stripped down and it was significantly more than a "bondo" repair.

That was the first flight of that jet in 3 years. It was repaired after a landing mishap. The photo is of the first maintenance flight. We want to keep it silver... but MX pushed back for corrosion reasons. Apparently it will get painted.

Almost 69. The first 55 jets were built in 1955-1957. First flight 1 Aug 55. Those jets are all retired or crashed. There are 30ish jets flown now. Four built in '68, and the rest in the 1980s.

I've never been in the Navy, and I've logged about 12 different Navy/Marine aircraft in my logbook. All were payback/orientation/exchange flights.

PJ was "the old man" in our pilot training class and was my table-mate. Showed up at his fighter squadron at about 29-30 years old. Got the Air Force Cross in Desert Storm for his efforts in saving Devon Jones who was shot down in his F-14. I'd say he did ok...

I'd have to say that any remaining confidence the flying public had in the MAX went right out the door.

A good friend of mine got a Silver Star for an air-to-air kill, but that's probably the exception, not the rule. Rico Rodriguez had three A2A kills, but the highest he got was a DFC. I recall that MOB Tremel got a DFC for his Super Hornet kill.

Ah. Makes sense. My understanding is that on larger USAF aircraft, like the C-17, KC-135, etc... they often travel with flying crew chiefs that are part of the crew AND do various amounts of maintenance. Especially if they are, for example, an Osprey or C-5 crew in Africa. So yes... I stand...

I don't know about the Navy, but there is no way an AF T-6 would get worked on by anyone other than a USAF-qualified T-6 maintenance person.

In the AF, most pilots I know don't list any language skills, so they can avoid a non-vol to a language related job. I have a friend that was on the career fast track, and his fluency in Arabic helped get him a key job working for a Flag officer. So yes... depending on what you want to do...

Call the AF bases around you and get the number for CATM... Combat Arms Training & Maintenance. Those folks should be able to point you in the right direction if something is available.

It's only my anecdotal and observed opinion, but the transition is much more common in the USAF. In fact, my daughter just got her USAF Pilot wings last year after 6 years as a Nav/CSO.
