Fleet week was pretty fun. Highly recommended, if you get the chance.

NFO student trying to convince spouse of jets

12 months into my JO tour, I've been on workups dets for 2.5 months, on cruise for 7 months, TAD for 3 weeks, and about a month of POM leave total. So that leaves...1.5 months at home? 2nd year is looking somewhat similar. At the 24 month mark, I'll have spent over half my time in the squadron...

Jet Catches Fire Aboard USS Carl Vinson

This was a while ago, but I'm pretty sure the remaining planes for that recovery were diverted. The jet trapped roughly 1+30ish prior to the next launch. They put the fire out, reset the gear, towed the plane out of the LA, cleaned up the LA, and did a combat FOD walkdown, all in time for the...

F-35B/C Lightning II (Joint Strike Fighter)

Yes, but they also have to separate the two aircraft and sequence them individually into the pattern, which can be painful.

Stupid questions about the Rhino (Super Hornet)

^ wasn't aware there was an internal version, but I've seen them on the wingtip stations. As far as I know, which isn't a lot, they're mostly used for A/A training evolutions.

Have a question for a USN fighter pilot?

I think there's some 122 or 125 instructors who read this site, so they may be able to help you with that.

Parts Incorporated in a Flight Suit

^^Rhino radios are pretty easy to understand without CEPs, so I'd assume legacy radios are similar. Some days, I have no idea how ATC knew what we said in the -45.

"Navy Freeing up Aviation Training Pipeline"

I'll buy pretty easily that 43 NSS is about an 88 - 92 average. Study your @ss off, don't miss more than 5 questions on any test, and if there's a question you're not sure about, ask the instructor for clarification during the test. The worst that can happen is they can say, "I can't really...

For those of you who like Big Picture/Strategic subjects

/sigh I wish I could let these things go. PE is Gm1m2/(r_2 - r_1), not r^2. You wrote the force due to gravity, potential energy is force integrated with respect to distance. Plus, potential energy is really only valid in conservative fields (i.e. no air resistance) If we're gonna nerd out...

To answer your question, no, commissioning source doesn't matter.

^^^^^ Yes. Armada's point about higher TW ratio is valid, too, though.

One good eye, one not so good?

Just giving some extra guidance. Myopia, Hyperopia, and Astigmatism are what glasses/contacts correct for. It is quite possible, and not really a serious underlying condition, to have a disqualifying refractive correction if your vision is 20/40-ish, although probably unlikely. For example...
  24. Kickflip89

One good eye, one not so good?

Check your Rx against the limits for myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, as it is possible to have vision within limits (i.e. 20/40), correctable to 20/20, and be out of the limits for SNAs.

43 NSS needed to get into Primary

Wow. Prying open a safe? Hope they catch that dude, if that is true.
  26. Kickflip89

    Death by .ppt!

FOs did all the briefs when I was going through, first from the MCG / NATOPS, then from a whiteboard / briefing guide in T-1s. Eventually, we did a whiteboard / briefing guide for strike in -86, then went to straight up full-out brief from memory / whiteboard for strike-fighter and T-45s. Some...

43 NSS needed to get into Primary

43 Or Bust Just to be clear, it's doubtful that the actual NSS will change, just that the effort to achieve said NSS will increase over time as classes will try harder and harder to achieve it, thus driving up the average score, thus making it harder to achieve. I've attached a graph...
  28. Kickflip89

43 NSS needed to get into Primary

Yup, by making it an NSS minimum instead of simply a 90 or whatever required on the tests, it kind of creates a self-raising bar. If the first few classes meet the bar, the bar raises. If those classes meet the bar, it raises again. I shall henceforth refer to it as the reverse limbo. Good...

Choice of Aircraft after Flight School

Needs of the Navy. Everyone gets a dream sheet, but it may or may not be available regardless of how well you did or did not do. In general, the better you perform, the more likely you'll get what you want. In terms of actual numerical odds, it changes from week to week / month to month.

How does a Poli Sci (non-tech) Degree holder make it through API (high-tech)

I'll go ahead and add my $.02 if it helps ease your mind. I was a physics major, and API is not at all about complicated ideas or understanding difficult concepts. It's about memorizing things, studying with your buddies, and having fun with your weekends.

The perennial Navy vs AF flight school smackdown (split from the "What %" article)

Kickflip's theory of flight school (as a current student): -Show up as prepared as you can be -Ask stupid questions early, don't wait until it's obvious you didn't know and you didn't ask. -Execute as well as you can -Don't sweat the small stuff. Always try to be safe. -You're gonna make...

The perennial Navy vs AF flight school smackdown (split from the "What %" article)

True, In fact, I think the only time we touch the CBs is if the DDIs read, "I'm sorry, Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that."
  43. Kickflip89

The perennial Navy vs AF flight school smackdown (split from the "What %" article)

What is it like to be an NFO?

I'll attempt to give you a little info on the above, but I'm still very much a cone and have just started the RAG, so maybe some others can chime in with more knowledges. In the newer -18Fs the HCUs do have weapons release buttons, which means that the WSOs do have the capability to pickle...

    Lemoore and Oceana questions...

Lemoore / Hanford are both pretty small, with little to no "social" interactions (available pretty girls). LA doesn't seem all that great unless you know some people there. San Diego is awesome, but it's a pretty long drive and not really practical for frequent visits. Haven't been to San...

    NFO Flight Time

you do IFS, which is 25 hours at the controls of a Cessna. Other than that, you don't get a lot of actual stick time. You sit up front for the first few flights in primary and get some stick time, but other than that I wouldn't count on getting the controls after that, although your IP may let...
