Monster Marine OCS thread: stupid questions answered here!

Have you tried/heard of Sharpie "Industrial Super Permanent"? On the marker is says "Specially formulated ink for industrial, laboratory, and or commercial use. REMAINS permanent under most chemical washes and extreme heat and steam (up to 500 deg. F) I'm not sure how common they are in the...

    Harrier and Hornets futures!

This doesn't directly answer the question with regards the C & D Hornets, but shows the potential longer range range plans for Rhino. Per Aviation Week & Space Technology, it looks like the Super Hornet will be around for some time, at least until 2030. Software updgrades, AESA, net-centric...

    State of the Union Reaction

I'll second that. I got a good laugh out this one too. The whole quote was pretty solid, but the punch line did it for me. ...Good stuff. I gotta bail, no comment on this debate (other than pulling out would be a mess) :D

Royal Marines ride Apache wings to rescue buddy

As with the 60B, I believe the Apache main transmission is rated to run dry for 30 min. In a similiar event as above (wish I could remember the unit), they indeed tested the limits. After taking rounds to the tranny, they flew it dry for 27 min.

    Disappointing ASTB results, what now?

Retake the test! My initial thought immediately after I took the ASTB was that it was questionable if I could have done better. However, after another long series of studying sessions, I would imagine that it would reinforce any info that didn't stick your first time around. If you need math...

    A "cached" search function?

This is essentially what I was getting after in my original post. I didn't know of that relatively basic web search function which limits all returns to hits within a given site, [site:airwarriors.com "stuff to search"]. It works well, and does indeed highlight the search criteria where it...

    A "cached" search function?

Is it possible to enhance the search function capabilities of AW? When searching, a great number of results are often returned for a given search criteria, however it takes quite a bit of labor to sift through them. [GUN] Poll

Good comment, and unfortunately these days we are seeing more and more of this kind of garbage. I live in an area that never has shootings and where crime is very low. However about two weeks ago a young man was shot walking through a upper middle class neighborhood. Three individuals pulled up...

    AH-1Z and UH-1Y Doomed?

That's an affirmative, however they are not yet operational I believe. No point in responding/debating many of the accurate points that have been brought up in Apache vs. Cobra mission profile, employment, tactics, etc. No doubt the Marines utilize their aircraft a bit differently, and yes...

    AH-1Z and UH-1Y Doomed?

Any quick thoughts on why the Marines haven't been interested in the AH-64D...the best attack helicopter in world? (I'm sure this will be/has been debated). The Marines considered the Alpha model long ago, but went the way of the Cobra instead. Despite the potential argument for an improved...

    Super Hornet in Pensacola

    Super Hornet in Pensacola

Thread drift... ^ Nailed the answer to my next question, somewhat. - Of the many factors that lead to blow outs, what are the leading culprits? - What impact might a largely pilot induced mishap-smaller incident, have on his career (despite the many potential contributing factors)? What impact...

In the first picture before touchdown, does something look a little off...? So it is well established that one should go to Pensacola w/o a significant other, etc. However for clarification, and assuming your SO is understanding and supportive of your flight training (meaning she won't be giving you sh!t all the time), is the main reason for gowing alone that your time...

    Better than Google Earth

^^ Good find, pretty cool. I hope though that when using "Bird's Eye View," they create greater ability to navigate the image and zoom out. It seems that there exists essentially only two zoom modes (+ & -), both of which are quite close in. Anyone tried using the 3D Map/View function?

    Let's see your guns!

Have you looked into the Sig Pro 9mm (SP2022)? I would say it qualifies as a medium frame pistol. It is smaller than the P226, however slightly larger than the P229. As it is a polymer frame pistol, you'll save a couple ounces if you are considering carrying it, and it is also cheaper than the...

    Beautiful Flying....period

To add on to what others have said, torque and especially adverse yaw can be quite significant in extremely slow flight when nearing max angle of attack and stall speed. A signficant amount of right rudder and moderate 'right' aileron are needed to maintain coordinated flight (aside from pitch)...

I took the ASTB within the last two months, I agree, no calc on the ASTB. I studied quite a bit and still didn't complete the math portion of the test. I'd say in preparation give it a good effort, however at some point you aren't likely to greatly improve with continued practice on the math...
