Man you need to calm down. Unless you have done a lot of illegal crap and got caught or you flat out dont pay your bills. Secret only requires a computer background check.
Technique item only . . . but you might want to defer to the DSS folks as to what is "required" for any security clearance. Fun fact: I was just interviewed for my prior CO's periodic review for TS. LOTS of questions about social media, on-line profiles, Etc. Tip: do you have anything "online" that could be used to compromise your integrity? Just my .02c

I don't even have a facebook/myspace account.

I'm not into the "record-my-life and show-the-whole-world" type of things.....and never made a homemade sex tape either.

In most cases for you background if would keep you from getting a clearance it is probably something that would keep you from getting selected (unless it wasn't disclosed)

Credit is another matter, I have seen guys lose their clearance and be discharged because they could no longer hold a clearance, generally they made bad choices that led to this.

One guy my NRD sent to OCS was notified in OCS because of the amount of his debt he was not going to be granted a clearance and therefore could not be commissioned, he came home.

How much debt would it take for that to happen? Was it sheer amount or an inability to consistently pay as agreed (or both)?

And, just to demonstrate that the plural of anecdote isn't data, I was interviewed for... I think four periodic reviews in the last several months (there was a whole cluster of them), and the only questions the investigator asked were about alcohol use and taxes. Not sure how I was supposed to know if other people pay their taxes, but there you go. No questions about social media. It's understandable that people get worried about the clearance process. It takes a long time, it involves strangers digging around in your private life, and there's not a simple checklist of what you can do to make sure you get a clearance. They look at everything they can find about you, and make a judgement call.

I don't know for certain, but gut feel is that most folks in the military get approved for clearances, unless, as stated, you really have some truly major issues. And if you did have a major issue, you really shouldn't have the clearance. Most military who apply are doing so because they actually need it to be a contributing member in their command. I even know of some folks that had "snags", but still ended up getting cleared. These investigators recognize that. But if they can't clear you, you basically have to go into a different job/designator.

I am unaware of any officer designator that doesn't require you to have some type of clearance.

OPM doesn't mess around, E-6 with credit issue due to divorce clearance revoked, LCDR who was a DH failed to fully explain foreign national relatives was removed from all access to confidential material after his clearance was changed to no determination made (issue fixed after 3-4 months), E-5 failed to disclose a legal issue that was dropped had clearance changed to no determination, in my department I would see 2-3 enlisted guys lose their clearance due to credit issues each year.

A civilian I worked with went through his update that happens every so often, not sure what they found but he was escorted out of the building and did not return.

basically, pay your bills.

Jesus kiddies.........lighten up. Unless your making phone calls to Hajis in Peshawar or owe a couple hundred grand because you bet on the Browns to win (I'm a Browns fan), you'll be fine. Some of us have been through a couple of days in the chair getting a real clearance. Your getting a credit check.
