When does AMEX notice you're no longer on active duty? I'm still debating on whether or not I'll pay the fee, but not sure when I would have to pay the fee.

Also, given the AMEX credit for Global Entry, it sounds like doing this before coming off active-duty would be the smart move, especially if I don't keep the card. When is the card actually charged for GE? Is it right away or after approval?

It didn’t take long for Amex to figure out I retired.

As for Global Entry, I don’t recall. My company reimburses that now.

The fee is part of your January statement. So you pay it in February.
Are you talking about the AMEX fee? I am pretty sure that is charged on your AMEX "anniversary" so to speak. It's based on when you signed up for the card (possibly your first AMEX).

I think it gets charged right away. If I recall, they don't wait until your approved because you get charged no matter what (i.e. approved or denied).

Yep, it was charged right away for me, and the Amex reimbursement came through right away as well.

They sent me an email about 8 months after I left AD, which was fortunately about 1 month after they “paid” my annual fee, so I had another ~11 months before it was time to pay up, cancel, or convert to another card.

When the time does come, you can always ask them to give you a discount on the annual fee, too. Worst case you leave with nothing; best case they pay all/most of the fee and you keep it for another year.

Anyone have any luck changing their preferred airline on AMEX platinum outside of Jan? I know it's one per year in Jan, but due to inattention and/or laziness I failed to do so until the beginning of feb...

I did, so as long as I hadn't spent any money on the year yet they didn't seem to care. This was 1-2 years ago though so YMMV.

Give them AT orders... problem solved. SELRES scams.

For those of you who may be rocking the plastic AMEX Platinum, be advised there is a pretty sleek new metal card now available. My buddy whipped his out and I had envy, went online to "replace damaged card" and have it now. Also, don't be like me and let global entry expire, you can renew 1 year out.

Anyone have any issues with the Chase Sapphire Reserve? I recently (less than a month ago) opened the card, but after sending in my LES, I got a letter today saying I wasn't eligible for SCRA benefits because I opened my card after my active duty service period began. Anyone else have problems with this? Anyone else get charged the $450?
