Redesignation for some SNAs?

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has heard anything or knows anything the possibility of SNAs coming out of OCS and being "redesignated" as SWOs once in Pensacola? (If a 95% average in not maintained.) Could this be related to the wait time associated with getting to API after OCS, or some other new regulation? Any info would be appreciated....

Thanks!

There used to be a minimum NSS of 43 to graduate API, but that went away sometime late 2010/early 2011. As recently as October, there have been no significant changes to the standards for passing API (80 minimum on every test and you could still pass).

More importantly, as of recently, most people sent to redesignation boards are being separated from the Navy. There is a chance you might get a SWO billet, but manning cuts are affecting all designators equally right now.

Does redesignation occur for anything other than poor academic showing? How many SNAs who show up from OCS to API in Pensacola end up at the redesignation boards? Are there fewer spots for Primary than there are in API or something?

Apparently word on the street is the magic number is about 85%---as in the percentage of people they separate if you wash out. But why even think about that? Just kick ass and take names. Time spent worrying about failure is time better used for getting better and getting ahead of the learning curve.

And redes-ing can occur for medical NPQ, DORing, test failures, etc.

The numbers they put through API are the numbers they want to send on to primary---even if realistically that won't be the case with people rolling back for one thing or another. It's not like "We have 25 API people competing for 20 primary slots" or anything like that.

If you fail your physical, you can wash out. You go to a redes board which is NO GUARANTEE you'll be in the Navy, let alone get what you want.

Curious, why are you asking?

Not worried, just coming from a non-military background and trying to get as much info as I can... no reason not to be as prepared as possible. Leo, do you mean 85% wash out from API or 85% make it through to Primary?

If you go to a redes-board for medical, DOR, test failures, then ~85% get separated from the Navy and do not redesignate to another community.

Stop worrying, study hard, and you'll do fine. There is no point sweating something you have no control over.

Gotcha, Leo - thanks for the clarification.

You're definitely right, wlawr. Thanks again for the info!

That is the same percent that a person we sent as SNA said, he was one of the 85%

A while ago (a few years) we were told they offered immediate redesignation to thin out a few classes, but that was a one time thing.

I think that was around my timeframe, '08-09. A-Pool was VERY backed up and Flight Management was offering redes to us, no questions asked. A bunch of guys took it.

This happened in 2004-2005 as well, along with a host of other programs like "VR now!" and "free undergraduate education."

Ahh, I still remember the "Dear Captain" email from an aspiring flight student. That email went viral before there was a common term for going viral.

You must be referring to BEE (Best Ensign Ever). Hopefully he maintains the positive attitude throughout his training/career.
