The Perpetual MEGA Space Thread

33 years ago today, the Challenger exploded a few minutes after liftoff. For those of us around them, it was one of those moments you remember where you were when you heard the news.

Late to the thread, but I was literally walking out the door for FAM 1 at VT-6 when the Challenger was turning into an airborne explosion on the ready room TV. Not super-heartening to this SNA.

But FAM 1 went well, other than having to barf in my glove because I forgot my sick sak (only time ever).

I know quite well the guys that are developing the rotorcraft to fly on Saturn's moon, Titan. Much denser atmosphere than Earth, much less gravity than Earth. You could almost flap your arms...

Only time ever I forgot a barf bag.
Roger that...I misinterpreted what you had stated...I [erroneously] interpreted it as being the only time ever that you had gotten air sick and barfed...my bad.

Here’s the thing. It’s also the only time I blew chunks in an airplane. I attribute it (lack of hurl-age) to the mystical power of the barf bag in my lower left flight suit pocket.

Not going to say I never came close. Dutch-rolling through the high haze at 40K’ over central FL in a T2 Buckeye while not fully recovered from a hangover following the end of a gun det, was an exercise in mind over gullet.

I hear you...although I never “talked on the big white phone” in an airplane or helicopter, I was EXREMELY close on FAM-“SO YOU WANNA GO TO AOCS?”...which was the flight where my beloved OR [LT Lyle Hanseman] flew a T-34B from KMSP to KEAU to conduct my disorientation flight at KEAU and sign papers in the summer of 1986.

He had packed about 23 barf bags and instructed me to use all of them if necessary. He tried really hard to make me “talk on the big white phone”...boat loads of yanking and banking...and it was 100*F which I think he planned...but I sorta fucked up and refused to remove [or loosen] my necktie because it was such an important flight to me and I wanted to look semi-respectable for the occasion...also, Mom & Dad were watching.

Anyway, eyeballing those 23 barf bags had a real impact...“I will NOT talk on any of the big white phones!”...I probably stated that about 341 times for the duration of the hop...which annoyed my OR.

You win some and you lose some. Looks like the starlink mission booster didn't quite make the boat. You can see the nice splash on the right side of the screen. We still have the Dragon Crew to look forward bringing us back in the business of putting people into space! What a time to an space nerd!

I've been watching this in chucks at work the last few days. Some good stories and some interesting info about SpaceX.

I'll give you that nittnany, but it's still a low orbit space taxi. I just wish we could think bigger.
