After hearing about some of those parties, it may have been worth it. Or maybe not...

Not sure if anyone has heard this game for the PS2. It's called Front Mission 5: Scars of the War, which deals with warfare using giant robots called Wanzers (Walking Tanks), nuclear threats, and intercontinental politics.

Believe me when I say this - The cinematography is laden with tons of overt references from Top Gun (e.g. flight suits, ready room bravado, attitudes prevalent among combat pilots, one feisty female love interest for the main guy, etc.) as well as other war drama-themed titles like Black Hawk Down, Jarhead, Platoon, We Were Soldiers, and Band of Brothers. Nevertheless, I personally consider this one of my favorites.

It was created by the same company that brought gamers the Final Fantasy series (Squaresoft, now Square Enix), from which it adopts the same turn-based strategy/RPG formula, only under the sci-fi/military theme.

No lies, Down Periscope is my favorite Navy movie and arguably the most realistic.

  1. Band of misfits for a crew? ✅
  2. Big Navy passing on a legit bro and leader for CO? ✅
  3. Out of touch Admiral? ✅
  4. Said band of misfits leaving the OpArea (if you ain’t cheatin, you ain’t trying) ✅
  5. Said band of misfits overcoming the Navy’s bureaucracy and dogma to overcome (and sink a ship in Norfolk harbor no less?) ? ✅
  6. A helicopter lands in a parking lot at the end ?✅

I wonder what Iron Eagle did for Air Force Recruiting? ✈
If you don’t dig “Chappy” Sinclair you might be a racist...but if you don’t believe 17 year old kids can fly combat missions in an F-16...well you just ain’t a believer! The cassette player in the cockpit scene was the genesis of the cockpit Bluetooth idea!

For me, 1996's Down Periscope is a close second to 1959's Operation Petticoat. Both very funny movies. The trailers for those who have not seen the movies.

Btw, former US army tank driver Andrew Bacevich (he is also a politician:)) in his book "The New American Militarism: How Americans are Seduced by War " blamed TG1 as the recruiting poster selling false ideas: real war cannot be so clean, full of smiling faces and cool sunglasses, and million-$$s war machines and weapons are, generally, stuffed with malfunctioning equipment and never work so smoothly and perfectly as it had been showed. But people buy. Who of Hollywood stars played tank drivers? Brad Pitt? Washington? Maybe it's time to offer this TC? Just to make the difference?

Clean? The best character in the movie (I'm a FO, so yea, I said it) died in a training accident leaving a wife and young son behind - the result of a real engine design problem that plagued the F-14 at the time. The main character grew up a socially ostracized orphan because his father died in war. Shit hot pilot in the opening scene turned in his wings within 6 minutes of the movie starting because he got scared. Hollywood and Wolfman both shrank an inch after getting shot out of the sky. Both (all four?) of the Enterprises catapults broke when they were needed most. Slider shit his pants as his F-14 got tagged with 20mm rounds,

Yea the good guys won - because America, fuck yea. But there was plenty of shit that went wrong in the movie if you paid attention.
