Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

I'm not sure I understand....if it's actually a leather jacket then the leather can't wear off since it should be all leather. Or are you saying the faux leather finish wore off? Or that the smooth exterior leather came off and revealed the unfinished interior leather? A-2s were originally made out of horsehide I believe which made them neigh indestructible.

Not wanting to shit up the Initial Flight Gear thread, but how many flight jackets do aviators end up collecting throughout their career? Are there any old school brown leather ones still around?
I got my issued leather jacket last week. They told us to make sure it fits nicely because this was the last time we would be given one unless we become the president of the United States (literally). They also told us they weren't able to be exchanged.

That is false. You can order a new one for a variety of reasons, as long as you turn in the old one. If it is lost, or stolen, you can survey it (paperwork to justify the loss) and still get a new one.

A 0530 launch would be unusual, but there will usually be food of some kind available 24/7 for aircrew.

Depends on the mission, and there are always exceptions, but in general launches do not happen that early. Most ships run ~12 hour fly day because (among other things) the deck crew can only work so many hours. What I've seen most for normal deployed operations is mid morning start of flight ops, but again, it depends on the tasking.

Hand wave much?

Leadership acknowledgement of the problem helps but it's more than that. Manning, resources, etc also play an important part.
Doesn't take too many resources to leave out some cereal and other self-serve types of options. Did those not exist on your ship?

Cereal was usually consumed within the first week of the MEU being on board. Beyond that the self serve options were usually PB&J and maybe some questionable fruit for the wardroom. I don't think the galley had any options for the enlisted aircrew, maintainers, and flight deck personnel.

I saw a few instances of off hours meals for large ops but it was a challenge for the SuppO to do that to his manning and the ships draconian commitment to it's office hours workday. Also gets complicated by the fact that there aren't multiple wardroom and gallies and these spaces are used for other purposes throughout the day. I've heard stories of ships coming up with unique solutions for combat ops like a hot line in flight deck triage to support the personnel involved in flight ops but that plan also assumes that the ship isn't handling any casualties. Without the manning, by design 24hr facilities, and requisite stores of a CVN it can be a hard but to crack. So for routine ops it means that you have to rotate your personnel through the scheduled meal times and operation schedule. Some ships are ok with hot plates being run to the various flight work centers and others strictly prohibit food outside of the wardroom/galley (looking at you IWO ?). So in a good ship this means you have folks who should be doing something else doing food runs while on bad ships you have folks actively running a food smuggling ring to make it happen. CVN has got it pretty good and the rest of Naval/USMC Aviation does the best they can with their lot in life.
