Depth Perception Denied at MEPS

Just got the letter saying that I am not qualified for SNA.

I know the civilian waiver is no longer an option. I got 20/17 vision for both eyes distant and near. I took the depth perception test at MEPS where I had to look at circles to see which stood out. To be honest, that MEPS test was compete BS. I expected to get my eyes dilated but they didn't give me one. What are my options besides giving up my dream to be a NA?

It's normal that they don't dilate your eyes at MEPS. They usually just do that at OCS. If the civilian doc is no longer an option, which seems to be the consensus around here, then you still have a shot at becoming an NFO.

Just called my recruiter, I'm going to try and retake the depth perception test like my life depended on it.

Good on your recruiter for getting you a retest. If he has that kind of pull, ask if he can get you tested with any of the other approved methods as well. Finally, get back on here (or get your recruiter) to explain how he was able to get you a retest. Plenty of folks getting the 'Welp, that's too bad' answer around here. Your information will be very valuable for another applicant! BTW, I have one of those 'thanks, but no thanks' letters in a box around here somewhere as well.

After I failed the DP test at MEPS, the administrator of the test was pretty cool and didn't put down any score and just said to get a prescription and come back. The prescription was for my eyesight because apparently, according to MEPS, it's not 20/20. So going on 3 months I haven't been back to MEPS yet because they need to bring in an orthopedic surgeon to make sure my back is good to go (herniated a disc 4 years ago,). In the meantime, I've been doing vision therapy with my optometrists' office. Essentially I'm wondering if this has helped anyone with the depth perception testing? Does anyone have experience with vision therapy where it actually helped? To be honest, this is freaking me out for the next time I go back (3rd time ).

I just retook the test and was able to pass A through F. I found that slowly tilting your head from side to side really helped. Also taking your time is KEY

The administrator not entering any data really hooked you up, made it look like they forgot to give you that test.

Oh absolutely. He asked what job I was looking for, I said pilot and he knew I had to pass depth perception. It also helped that since my vision wasn’t 20/20 without glasses he told me to get a prescription then come back.

Anyone try this on a retest?
Look upper left/right and bottom left/right.

strategies here.

Things that helped me before:
  • Practicing the Magic Eye stuff online
  • Getting glasses
Things that helped me during:
  • Relaxing your eyes (look through the machine).
  • Don't focus on one circle, or else all of them will pop up at you. Instead look at the general area of the circles, and see which one seems closer to you.
  • Looking away from the machine occasionally.
  • Picking 2-4. It will never be the first or fifth circle, because the circle has to have one on both sides to compare it to.
  • Last but not least, TAKE YOUR TIME. There's no time limit, so don't let the person administering your test rush you.
Remember, if you fail the AFVT, you can still take the Randot/Fly and the Verhoeff test, and those are much easier.

Great tips.

How are you able to take the Randot/Fly or the Verhoeff test?

Hey all. Just found out I failed DP at MEPS 3 weeks ago. My recruiter told me I don't have to retake the exam at MEPS or a military eye doctor. Apparently I can go to my private eye doctor and they can administer the test and MEPS will accept it.
