Age Limit for Pilot

Hey, everyone

I'm prior enlisted (2007-2011) and I'm getting ready to head back in, only this time as an officer. I'm taking the ASTB on Tuesday and am pretty well excited. I'm 31 with no medical problems and I'm in good shape. I've been lecturing at the University of Tennessee and have had ample time to workout (been following Tactical Barbell, for what it's worth).

So here's the dilemma. My recruiter has informed me I can go in as an NFO, but not as a pilot. Apparently there is a slightly longer age cut-off for being an NFO. And, of course, if I hadn't been prior enlisted I wouldn't be able to go in as an NFO either. I am grateful. Very grateful.

But I'm curious: does anyone know if I'll be able to somehow "switch" over to pilot once I get in? Or is this ruling pretty well set in stone?

Moreover, is it true that NFOs get to go through Flight School, SERE, Jump, etc? I just want to make sure I'm not being hoodwinked. Joined before as a Master at Arms. That was an eye opener.

P.S. I apologize if this isn't the right place to post it.

Thanks for taking the time to read/respond.

You're too old for both. Must commission/graduate OCS BEFORE turning 31. Sorry.

My recruiter and I literally just got off the phone, and he said it was before 32. We've been in communication for months. I was 19 when i joined, if that matters. Can you point me to the source of the age limit?

Waiverable to 34 in Marines.... If you want to do that to yourself. I've seen a few 32 yo waivers get approved, some prior service some not. It would all boil down to if you want to go that route and your physical fitness

Unfortunately many recruiters hear but don't listen when they are taught about the PA's, they believe the age limit means if you are still 31 or 27 then you are still ok, I have seen many applicants get bad news based on OR's not listening.

Cannot tell how many “seasoned” ORs still call me to confirm the Pilot/NFO age limits.

It bears repeating that if you go the Marine route, do not go NFO. They will be out of the NFO business in a couple years.

I admit I'm still confused on Pilot age limits even after speaking with the OCM about it. It reads as "not passed the 27th birthday upon commissioning (for non-prior)." I took that to read as 27 is ok, and you have until 28. I guess the keyword is "birthday". Seems it would be clearer just to say "less than".

I've seen some places with cheat sheets that have it written as 19-27 and that probably has tripped up more than a few folks.
