Are Abbot uniforms worth it?

nfo2b

Well, not anymore... :(
Thanks guys, some good answers. For now, I think I'll get one set of the Abbot poly-wool khakis (liked the way they fit me better than the Navy-issue ones, and the micro-fiber is nice), and the Chokers. Given the frequency of wearing everything else, I don't think I'll spend my duckets on those right now, especially since there's really nothing wrong with the ones I have.
Thanks again for all the feedback!

Hey NFO,
If your commissioning class is going through abbotts... check with the guy. If we had a certain % of our guys get abbotts stuff, they donated a brand new sword to our class, we used it as a gift for our honor grad. Not that you will need a sword, but it was a 500 dollar free gift from abbotts to one of our grads.

NFO2B,
Have you checked out the NEX Poly-Wools? I wore them at the NROTC for 3 years and they never failed me....Might be a bit less expensive then Abbots.

Uniforms you'll need for your immediate future:
1-2 sets of khakis
1 SDB
1 Choker Whites
1 Summer Whites
1 Wash Khakis (for the boat if your skipper directs it)
1 Mess Dress Blues (Highly Recommeded....I bought Mess Dress White Jacket and have never worn it)

Like others have said before, you will RARELY wear most of these uniforms...you'll be in a bag or khaki's for most of your initial tour.

Go with the NEX poly-wool khakis/whites and SDBs. Save the $$$.

Have whites and SDBs on hand cleaned in the closet ready to go at all times. You never know when someone is going to buy the farm and you'll need them on short notice. (crass but true)

Nothing funnier than seeing a guy try to squeeze into his Abbot's uniforms a year later after he got them form-fitted during week 15 of OCS. Give it a year and the pockets pooch out and the hems rise.

Buy them as you need them for the dinner dress mess uniforms.

I have no personal experience with Abotts, but I've never had any problems with the NEX uniforms. Like many others have said, I don't see the need to spend that much on uniforms, let alone if you're going to wear them often or not. Better things to spend your money on.

My personal recommendation would be to buy khakis and summer whites from the NEX and dress unis from Abbott's. I haven't seen the Brooks Bros. SDB suit (although I do have the shirt and tie from them), so I can't vouch on their quality vis a vis Abbotts. But the dress uniforms I have from Abbotts are great, and the lifetime free tailoring is money.

I've slammed Abbott's plenty of times on here. That package they push on new guys is retarded. Go NEX for khakis, summer whites and shoes. In a few years when you "mature" out of your slacks but the shirts still work and you're TAD to someplace with a NEX it's easy to buy a new set of pants that will match in shade and material. DO NOT buy a bridge coat.

The 'Flying Cross' SDBs at the NEX are awesome. I had to go to a funeral short notice while on leave and bought a set off the rack, only had to get the pants hemmed. Nicest damn SDBs I've ever worn. Try the "slim fit" jacket, even if you aren't "slim".

Once again, I will vouch for the Abbott's chokers. They tailor very nicely, the collars stand up straight and fit snugly but not uncomfortably. My first chokers were Abbott's and were awesome. Unfortunately I lost them in a move. I was in Pcola for 36 hours last week and number one on my things to do list was get new Abbott's chokers (I'm getting to that age where all my friends are "quitting" and scared no girls will ever like them again, lot of weddings coming up). Done and done.

That is what your SWO firends are for. Borrow their Bridge Coat or P Coat if you ever need one (not likely). I needed one 15 years ago for a weekend borrowed it from a SWO, and it is still hanging in my closet.

I just got a set of choker whites and they are sooo much more comfortable than the set I got at OCS. They are a little more prone to wrinkles which I discovered at the winging 2 days ago. Also they are a little more translucent than the usual stuff so choose your underwear wisely.

I think Zab's advice still holds well:

I just got a pair of chokers a few years ago and they have full lining that doesn't show anything, they don't have that anymore?
