USAA Senior Bonus

This last December I got my annual USAA Subscriber Savings distribution of approximately $270. OK, not as much as in some previous years, but better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. Then a few days ago I got my first Senior Bonus, approximately $930. Much better!

USAA pays out the Senior Bonus to members with 40 plus years (although it's not guaranteed for each year). I ditched USAA several years ago for auto and home, but kept my membership active by holding on to a small Valuable Personal Property policy with a measly $25 annual premium.

Did you consider cancelling your policies and cashing out your subscriber savings account? After 40 years I’ve bet you have a chunk of change in there.

I considered it at times when funds were tight, but I knew you had to wait about 6 months to get the cash, and additionally, I was satisfied with the coverage.

I never knew about the senior bonus until a few years ago when I called them up to cancel everything and move to Amica. (USAA wouldn't insure my new home due to brush fire hazards.) The guy I spoke with at USAA told me about the bonus, pointed out how many years I had with the company, and suggested that I keep a "token" policy with them to get my forty. (Plus he called me "lieutenant" despite my being in my 60's )

I don't think most USAA members know about this benefit. I can't find anything about it on their website, but it is discussed in some related forums.

Bundled they beat our options in da islands. Moving to hail country and we would have paid 1200 more/year with USAA for home/auto.

Hearing 'thank you for your service' before they hang up the phone is not worth 100 bucks a month.

Their insurance rates suck once you come off AD.

My insurance rates with them didn't change at all when I left active duty, never heard this one before.

I'm still happy with them and after hearing the experiences of two folks who have had house fires and were covered by them reinforced my decision to stay with them thus far.

I’ve been pretty happy with their insurance products, specifically the customer service aspects after some car stuff. Every time I shop around I have a hard time beating the price for two cars, House, and condo. 20% YoY premium spike in FL this fall was eye opening though. ?

Banking stuff, meh, I haven’t found anyone much better nationally. I’ve long since left their investment and mortgage products for greener pastures.

Thanks for the heads up, sir. I didn’t know about the forty until you mentioned it here. I’ll be at forty with USAA in a few years...so this is good gouge. Also, I really dig calling them on the telephone...they either call me “Lieutenant” [like you] or “Sir”...which is way better than what I get called by the wife unit and our teenager units. When I want to feel good about myself...I call USAA. :D

Their car insurance is shitty even when you are active duty. Geico blew them out of the water for my auto policy.

Hmm. That has yet to be the case for me in FL, TX, or CA. Home insurance in FL? Forget about it (but the same could be said about almost all the big insurers), but for Valuable Personal Property, Renters, and Auto, I've yet to find someone better than USAA. The one time I made a claim because I had some stuff stolen in San Diego, I had to fill out a police report, CC USAA on it, and probably within 2-3 days I had the money. Not only that, but I got more money than I asked for because they told me the replacement value on the bike I had stolen had gone up.

@Rockriver ...I forgot to mention @Brett327 ...he calls me names [like “clown” and “fuck stick’] at AW...so...ya, when Brett calls me names at AW...I call USAA. :D

I consider myself an observer of humanity... and I'm always judging.

What's that thing people always say? "Sing like nobody's listening and dance like nobody's watching, etc, etc." Fuck that. Everyone is watching, and they're pointing and laughing. :D

If you have a savings account with USAA do yourself a favor and look at Ally.

I've been happy with them until their payout for an insurance claim on a rental house's roof of mine was like $1,000 less than the cost of a replacement roof I paid for (through a family connection at a discount). If you're going to come up with a random number, at least send me a contractor who will do the job for YOUR price.... whatever, I'll be looking elsewhere for insurance soon enough.
