Not the CH-53K, but rather the new HH-60W for the Air Force. $73 million a copy. Now I know why Lockheed purchased Sikorsky...

Sikorsky HH-60W reaches critical design review

Sikorsky, which reached CDR ahead of the projected July date, will replace the USAF’s aging HH-60Gs with 112 new helicopters at a cost of $73 million per unit. The entire programme, including research and development, procurement and flyaway costs is estimated at $9.8 billion

WTF, that's 2 × the cost of an MH-60R.
I have to assume that's the prototype or LRIP cost, not production unit.

I think that's the crappy math of total cost/total units. I'd be interested to see what an MH-60M model costs to compare, since they're essentially buying that.

FWIW, the last new HH-60M I picked up from WPB had some paperwork indicating the cost was $18 mil.

I meant the tricked out 160th versions with the probe and the gucci mission equipment. I imagine that option package adds a bit to the MSRP. Add in the Air Force doesn't have the numbers like the Army to spread the development costs over, and the high price quoted above sorta makes sense.

The paperwork you signed has only the costs from the MY contract. The price as quoted above has development costs rolled in.

Looks like the 53K is having some extra problems - then again, that is to be expected when designing a gearbox to hold 24,000 HP....

that must be one stout transmission....
did a bunch of work on the new transmission for the AH64E....which was a major upgraded box. cant imagine a 24000 hp gearbox!

According to all knowing Wikipedia - USAF will have more -60s than the 160th.

Development costs are also different for 160th due to SOCOM and its acquisition authorities. Regular Army buys the 160th airframes and outfits those airframes with any piece of equipment that is not considered special operations peculiar (SO-P). SOCOM then adds on SO-P items and pays via MFP-11 funds (vice MFP-2 funds / General Purpose Force funding). Essentially, their program is spread between two separate 'services'.
