API Roommate(s) Needed NAS Pensacola

Gentlemen and Ladies,

I'll be headed down to NASP for IFS/API come March 8th (it's been a long time coming). I'm in need of a roommate(s). I don't have a place yet but I've been looking at the Perdido Key or Downtown area. I'd really like to live on the beach but it's not a deal breaker. Male or female roommate(s), I don't mind.

Me: I'm a 25 yr old male Marine who graduated via OCS.

If you have any suggestions on places to live I'd appreciate it. I've been reading various threads on this very subject.

Thanks,

UCbearcat

Snug Harbor in Perdido Key is pretty nice and some of the condos are fully furnished. It is ~20 minute drive to MATSG and ~15 minutes to API. The only downside is that it is a $30 cab ride from downtown.

I've been looking at that one actually. Did you live there? If so, how did you like it?

If I have time I'd like to get into some watersports. Kite boarding, scuba, surfing, boating... Anything I can get my hands on.

Snug Harbour is a popular choice for flight students. I lived there and enjoyed it especially during API when I was able to run home after the morning swim and shower, make some breakfast and head back for class. The distance from downtown and some of the watersports out near Pensacola beach is bothersome, but you are also pretty close to Perdido Key which is definitely a nicer beach in my opinion (less traffic and people).

Get some inflatable rafts from Walmart and a few beers per raft. Paddle out 1/2 mile and tie all 8 rafts together in a circle. Fun ensues. Trust me.

What kind of watersports does Pensacola Beach have? Does Perdido have any?

I don't even know if I'll have time for anything like that, but just seeing what's out there.

All of the things you previously mentioned. The SCUBA place out the front gate is pretty legit and they do some pretty cool boat dives (USS Oriskany!), and there is some okay beach diving near Pensacola pier and off the fort towards the NAS. You can rent boats on base, or buy one (I know a lot of guys that did... It's cheaper to go out on theirs...). There's a good amount of surfing at P'cola beach (although the waves are small) and I knew guys that went everyday. There were guys that did a lot of wake-boarding and kite surfing during the summer. If you end up in Corpus, kite surfing and wind sports are big because of the daily strong winds. Enjoy your down time and make the most of it, but keep the goal in mind. The training command tends to frown on guys getting hurt doing "extra-curricular activities". Enjoy it! Flight training will be one of the best times of your life.

I've fixed them, now I fly them!
For guys who are married and dont plan to bring their family to Pensacola, do they put us in the Gateway Inn or Navy Lodge or stay out in town. I wouldnt mind staying on the base during my time in P' cola. I plan/hope to do primary in Corpus, where my family is.

I know this a little off topic, but i noticed you had a report date of 08 Dec 2013. Do you remember/know what the people who stayed at OCS did during Christmas "break"? I plan on not leaving RI for leave and a am wondering if they give liberty during Christmas day. Any other info would be great!

Thanks.

I stayed for Christmas Day, and stayed on the base and so did anyone who did not take leave in my Class. Also, it depended on what stage you were in. I was still in the first 2 weeks when Christmas break came along, the more senior Class had more liberties (especially the Candio's).

I figured that would be the case. I have a tentative date of Dec 14 for OCS so i'll have indoc week then 2 weeks of "break" (if you can call it that lol). Thanks for the info!

Hell ya we did! Sleep in and make the younger classes shovel snow and clean King Hall ;)

Ya tbh I wouldn't go home. You don't have any leave acquired (2.5/per month) also you have a two week stand down in King Hall then you go back to RLP. Keep your mentality sharp during the xmas stand down as I know a few that were going back into week 3 after the stand down and ended up DORing.

So is there any chance of being able to explore Rhode Island at all? Or is my liberty only limited to the base?
