I believe ship selection is just the group of SWO's getting together with a list of available ships and they figure out who wants to go where. Never heard of it being based on class rank. Also class rank at OCS does not matter, once you commission everyone is an Ensign and has a fresh start. I know a few people that thought OCS was the Navy (it's not) and others like myself did well and cared only about getting through not class rank.

I know in my class the SWOs used class rank to determine who went where. Might be a different situation because there were only five people selecting and three of them wanted the same ship. But I know one guy that got selected for a ship he didn't want was because of his class rank.

Are you guys talking about the candidate ranks that come along with the billets in candio phase? Because I'm pretty sure the SWO's in our class selected their assignments as officer candidates.

That's why I've been told, I'm just curious how that ranking is determined.

Think he was referring the ranking verse the rest of the class. I remember seeing the spot on my record for class rank but didn't pay attention to it. The SWOs in my class selected in week 6-7.

Givemeinfo: I think class rank is based off of academics, PT and inspection results.

What is the ship selection process for SWOs like? Do all the SWOs get together and figure it out? Or is it free-for-all based on rank?

Our SWOs were given the sheet with available ships/ports and were told to figure it out. How your group of SWOs decides who gets what is all on you.

Ooh, I thought of a few stupid OCS questions on the drive home.

I have really light skin, and sunburn easily (even in RI). 9-10 months of the year, I need sunscreen if I'm going to be outside more than 30 min.

-Will I have time in the morning to put on sunscreen? (Will the DIs yank me straight out of bed out into the sun ever?)
-Will I be allowed to bring sunscreen into OCS?
-Will I have time to reapply throughout the day?

I figure countless Irish like myself have gone through OCS, but I wonder how that works.

The only question I can answer is that you will be allowed to take sunscreen to ocs.

I saw something about oral contraceptives up there, so, some of the girls in the office have the same question. Will they be tested for pregnancy before leaving to OCS and what happens if they are or get pregnant? If there's a link I could forward to them that anyone knows about I would appreciate it. I myself haven't found anything but perhaps an insider knows!

I don't know what happens if you are pregnant when you get there, but if OCS is anything like DCOIC, that first morning all of us women had to take a pregnancy test. This was separate from the UA that they did.

Question regarding travel/move following OCS graduation for a married non-prior. The current plan is to have my wife load our car with essentials and stuff we don't care to have others move and drive with my mom and step-dad to Newport for commissioning, whenever that is. Parents will be heading to see some other siblings on the east coast and wife and I will head for Pensacola provided I don't have OHARP orders prior to that. We will then have the Navy move the rest of our HHG once we have a place in P-Cola. Guess I am wondering if this makes sense or looking for any other suggestions, I will be flying to OCS regardless because there is no way my pickup could make that trek from Minnesota.

Also, as part of the HHG I would be looking to ship my motorcycle, is this common or is there a different way that is done? Thanks!
Once you have your orders to your permanent duty station, you are able to schedule a move through the, ah, wonderful move.mil site. You don't need to wait until you've found a place; you can schedule your move for a date in the future depending on when you report to Pensacola. They'll provide an estimate for when your stuff will arrive. The rest of it (packing up the car with essentials) is the way to go. I'm pretty sure they will ship motorcycles. If I remember correctly, you can indicate that you've got a motorcycle when you're filling out your pre-move forms.

Where can I find packs of crew neck shirts for women? Neither Hanes nor fruit of the loom makes them. Do most women just get the boys sizes? Also I didn't receive an answer if anyone knew if both black and white sports bras could be taken to OCS or just white. I'd really appreciate an answer.

I survived DCOIC and my regular drilling by buying mens crewneck shirts in small.

I know how hard it is to find a good sports bra. When you find one it is magical. Hopefully you will have the same luck that I had and you can find that same magical bra in white for sale online. In reality no one really sees them because they will be under your PT gear which is opaque. However, I erred on the side of caution, bought white, and didn't have any problems.
