Great source for ASTB

VFRonly

I found this website and found that it had practice tests for the ASTB. It shows your weak areas as well as strong ones by each section in the test. I also found the electronic version of the 8th edition Peterson's Master the Military Flight Aptitude Tests and 8th edition Master the Officer Candidate Tests on there. Pretty nifty!

Cheers

Thanks for sharing this gouge!

This post is a bit older but has anyone tried this test? Anyone who has recently taken the ASTB care to take a stab at it? I'm really interested to know the accuracy.

Ok great. Thank you. Are there any sections in particular that are relevant or is it 50-60 across the board?

Also, is this from when you were practicing or did you just take it and compare to your ASTB experience? How long ago did you take this one? The ASTB? If its not too personal, what were your scores for both?

Thanks again.

I'd say across the board 50-60, I took it about 1 month ago. To be more specific, the math questions were a bit different, with more word problems, I'd recommend going to the 1001 questions thread, that should prepare you adequately. Reading wasn't bad, same for mechanical. Aviation was tough in my opinion, more targeted than most of the guides I'd read. I think the general advice of reading the FAA guidebook is wise. Good luck.

Awesome, thank you very much. I will check out more gouge and the FAA guidebook as well.

Theoretically though, if someone were to score really well here, which sections might they be sufficient in?

I took the ASTB about 2.5 months ago, but did not use this resource. I did just take the practice test to compare to the ASTB and found that nowhereelsetogo is very correct in the 50-60% relevance.

I have a private pilot's license, so the aviation sections weren't too difficult, but if you get a FAR/AIM or a GLEIM Private Pilot's Study guide, you should get the information you'll need for those sections.

ASTB scores: 8/9/8 OAR 55

Here is what I noted:

There were a lot more word questions in the math section on the ASTB, I actually found a good study guide for the math section to be the ACT prep books as they cover more word problems than the ASTB study guides.

The mechanical and reading sections are very good practice for the ASTB: focus on the concepts and you will be fine.

For the nautical portion there are a couple guides I used such as the Basic Seamanship Manual and, if you have access, there are some Non-Resident Training Courses offered that will help, such as the "seaman" course, and even the Bluejacket's Manual. It has good information on ships/boats and nomenclature.

This isn't as specific as I'd like, but I hope it's a good stepping-off point for this resource. If you have any questions about study guides/resources I used, just ask, I'm more than happy to help as I'm sure other's on the site are as well.

Best of luck.

Good info. Math section was definitely the toughest but nothing trivial. I'm just glad I got selected for pilot finally! Such a long process we OCS candidates go through.

This was a great test and it helped out immensely because it was timed. Unfortunately math was first and I did this during work, so I was unable to focus much on it. I would say I did considerably well on the practice, but current military members tell me that the actual test is much harder.

I would like the opportunity to take the practice test again, but that seems not to be an option. As well all the reading comprehension questions that were on this test, were on my actual ASVAB. Just saying... And I just took the ASVAB two weeks ago.

I'm not 100% sure as it was a while since I've been on there. I do believe there were more than 1 test for the ASTB stuff, just search around. Best of luck!

As the person above you stated, he wanted to take the test again. I would honestly go out and buy officer candidate test books and ASTB books from a book store or Amazon. I found that the repetition of practice tests helped.

The actual ASTB felt relatively close to the practice test, I think that taking the actual test added stress, thus makes it harder. I also found the math to be hard for me personally, but doing the problems over and over certainly helped me with time. Just prep for the test, you will do great. Feel free to message me if you have any other questions.
