August 2011 Board

I won't be accepting mine if I get selected. I am about to start the DEP-in for an Air Force slot.

Sweet! You're the first on the list for a six pack...I guess there are 25 or so alternates, but they don't provide NRD the results of where on the list I am (per my OR). Good luck in the AF, it's great to have options like that!

Gonna be one pissed off recruiter lol.. My recruiter hasn't returned the phone call yet.. Still waiting.

He just called me to let me know I got accepted. Wasn't mad at all. I sent him an email about 4 days ago letting him know I had accepted the AF offer. He told me he never got back to me because he was just waiting on the results. He was really excited about it and just encouraged me to think about the type of aviation I wanted to be a part of. He didn't knock the AF at all. He said he knew I was going to get selected and that he thinks I would do well in the Navy.

He asked me to take some time and seriously consider which side I wanted to go with and I agreed to do it. I told him I would let him know by next Thursday so that he could let an alternate have a spot if I go with the AF.

I was in the same situation, I was under the impression from my OR that I had to start all over again. He never mentioned that a board would "honor" anything.

I was also in a similar situation and the problem with the reconsideration process is that it isn't well documented, so most recruiters have no idea how exactly to submit and work it. My recruiter was told by the master processor at Millington to just submit everything like a normal application and they would take care of everything at Millington.

Congratulations to everybody who got selected; I hope to see the majority of y'all in Newport. The first round is on me.

For those who were non-selects, my best advice is to just keep plugging away. Apply early and apply often! As I've previously mentioned, it has taken me 8 different applications through USNA, ROTC, and OCS to get picked up. I also ran into considerable problems during MEPS and had to go to a reconsideration board in August. Understand that if this is what you really want, and you keep at it long enough, it'll happen. Best of luck.

MEPS and SF86 done, going to schedule whatever else needs to happen with my OR tomorrow. I got a CSO spot with the AF last week, and told the latest recruiter they assigned us to that I wanted to wait until the Navy results came out to say yes or no, and his response had me worried that I just said "no". This is a huge relief!

I will obviously wait to hear from my OR, but since this situation isn't too common, what does happen? Are you automatically accepted again? My OR was careful to note that when the board happened (a little less than a year ago) I was accepted at that time.

I am applying to the AF at the same time as well, but correct me if I'm wrong, the AF does not have alternates. If you go with AF, you would give one SNA alternate your slot. But if you go with the Navy, your AF slot would just be gone.

Just my 2 cents, think it through with your wife which is best for both of you. My AF recruiter told me that the average amount of time AF personnel go on deployment is 121 days or so, which is good for a family man of course. Compare that with the Navy 6-8 months on carriers.

Thanks for the input. This is a much more challenging decision than I expected it would be. I think the Navy would be tons of fun but I just have a feeling that the AF will be better for my wife and future childeren. My wife feels the same. And I think it is awesome to have the opportunity to fly off the end of a boat. Maybe I will get the opportunity to fly an exchange tour with the Navy.

non select..
To all the people who said gpa and scores wasnt everything, I now 100% completely disagree with you.. It is all about GPA and scores..I had everything outstanding, extracuriculars to evals, interviews to prt scores, volunteer activities to CO recommendation. GPA and ASTB scores werent on par with some of the rest, and i have to think that is the only reason.. Very bitter here..
This was a real blow to me as it was my only shot to be pilot due to my age and was the reason i enlisted with a degree 3 years ago.. Very upset..Is there an appeal process? Is the NFO board really taking place in October?

It all comes down to which airframe you want to fly. I saw a documentary a couple of months back called speed and angels. If you want jets then the AF is the way to go. In that doc, they showed a board/chart that indicates who's the top students and the bottom rankings. There was only 2 points difference between #1 and last place. Top 3 students gets their choice (mostly jets), the rest gets whichever the navy needs/has left (helo). Just sayin...
