Para-Ordnance 1911 with some nasty hollow points and a blindingly-bright tactical light...and a crying 1 year old (I feel sorry for anyone who makes it past the 1911).

The dogs aren't quiet when people get near the house, and the alarm will go off if they come in. They will get shot if they stay-Remington 870 Police for the wife. Sig P250 (Daily Carry) on my nightstand or dresser.

In the random NRA literature I get in the mail (which can get tiring at times), I read occasional articles about how the "myth" of the shotgun being a good home defense weapon needs to be addressed. They then go on to mention some cogent points about how some sort of long gun is a better option (usually either an AR or M1 Carbine-type). Personally, I think a handgun is the best option, with a shotgun as a close second (but either way works). Any thoughts?

And I think it's probably overkill for where I've lived, but I've usually had my Colt 1911 sitting in my night stand, replaced by my 229 while my 1911 got some new night sights.

This.....Except to say that no matter what you use be sure you find out how well it works for you under pressure, in unusual positions etc. Will you short shuck a shotgun if you are in a hurry? Can you shoot a weapon with one hand/arm? Ever shot it weak handed? I grew up shooting 870's at doves. I shot it pretty well and it was my go to HD weapon until I had to shoot it prone in a 3 gun match. Can be done for sure but it isn't as easy as I thought it would be. Shooting/reloading it weak handed was the kicker. My HD shotgun is now an FN SLP. For me shooting an auto snotty is easier than a pump.

Can you mount a light on your go to weapon? Can you use it without ruining your night vision while killing his? What ammo platform is more prone to over penetrate? 5.56 or 9mm? That answer might surprise you.

Best may really be what ever round is completely reliable in the weapon you shoot It's what works what works best for you.

+1. I go with the Remington 870 tactical. I'll probably spring for a gen 3 Glock 23 to back that up one of these days.

Done & done. I have both, but with 4 munchkins, they stay in the safe. The alarm & 95 lb Golden are going going to have to slow down an intruder long enough for me to get to the safe.

German Shepherd, HK USP or P2000 on the night stand, and Mosberg 590 next to the bed.

Typically intruders that have done even 5 min of prep work will steer clear of a house that has large dogs. Even if they are goldens.

The place my mom lives in Austin got hit by transients 0 times in 10 years that we had our golden retriever. Once he was gone, we got hit 4 times in 3 years. I got my German Shepherd and have sent him to spend time with my mom and sister during flight school and other times, the house hasnt been burglarized in a while...

I'd vote for the shotgun first (I have a Benelli SuperNova), but the biggest issue in my small 1-bedroom apartment is that it is too large to maneuver around the small corners. Even with a tactical barrel, I couldn't leave my bedroom with a ready-position. That's a bit annoying. I'm in the market for either the HK P30 (.40) or HK45.

I had a salesman ring my doorbell to sell me an alarm system no so long ago. Thing is, I knew he was there before he ever got to my door as my Australian Cattle Dog opened up a can inside the house lol First thing he asked was do you have an alarm system...I said, you didn't hear him before you rang the door? Though I probably should get another alarm system like I've had in the past.

It appears no one has addressed the need for good training? Don't mean shit if you can't hit what you are aiming at and in a home invasion the stress level goes way up with a lot of considerations and it all has to be done within seconds of becoming aware of the threat, recognizing the threat, dealing with the threat. It don't mean a thing if you have the wrong tool for the job and no training to use that tool to start with. Bad guys don't give a shit what you have and are not intimidated with names or calibers. However, they do feel pain and incapacitation no matter how it is applied. I've been involved in a couple of home invasions and it did not turn out well for the invaders.

"owning a bag of clubs does not a golfer make".......to those that have never entered a friendly 3 gun (or IDPA) match you are missing out on a great time and an even better learning experience. Even if you only enter one, you go away knowing a lot about what works and what doesn't.......
