August 2011 Board

I would say on the plus side, from what I've read, the Navy is hard up for pilots right now. On the other hand, not so much for NFO's. I was thinking the same thing, that maybe just the absolute studs are posting, but so far everyone that's posted has a pretty spectacular set of stats. If it were only 3 or 4 people posting I'd buy into that theory, but within less than 12 hours of the thread being up they're all very strong.

The majority of posters on this thread have been in the Airwarriors.com community for a while. We have awesome scores because we have used this forum as a resource in our ASTB studying. Keep in mind, this is a very small sampling of the applicant pool. There is probably a myriad of mediocre applicants who don't even know this website exists. We should all take solace in the fact that we will be representing a large portion of the selectee stats. See ya' guys in the fleet!

Beware any gouge like this. The Pendulum that makes Big Navy want more pilots often swings very suddenly, and violently, in the opposite direction without warning.

That being said, don't let everyone else's stats get ya. It's the "Whole Person Concept". What makes one person valuable or unique may not work for another. The worse they can do is say no. And you never know what they're looking for.

It's not that the Navy is in dire need of pilots right now, rather the Navy does NOT need any other designators! The Quotas for FY-12 are 255 ~same as last year, but there will only be around 130 slots. 255 - previous year BDCP coming up for graduation and last years FS that are finally going to OCS=130. From what the OCS program manager told me, they will probably split it up into at least 2 boards, so best case we have 65 slots for this board. I can assure everyone that the people that are posting are the most qualified (of course the overachievers post their stats first!!) So everyone stop worrying, the ASTB isn't the only thing they look at. I have been told by many people that work in the OCS assesions program up here at CNRC that it is the whole person concept the board looks at. Let's all sit back, relax and pray we get selected!

Well 65 is alot better than I was expecting if that does turn out to be the case. Do you have any idea on what basis they decide to have more than X boards per year? Do they look at the quality of applicants in each board or is it just an arbitrary number that someone just chooses? How many applicants would you expect to be boarded? I know for the air force they have semiannual selections boards and look at anywhere between 200-300 pilot applicants. Do you think the numbers will be similar or much higher due to the lack of boards lately?

I don't know how they decide how many boards to hold, it seemed like it was just a matter of how many spots and how many applicants they have board ready. The OCS manager said there will probably be about 300 at board, but they already have 200 so who knows, I don't think that they will let the numbers get much higher than around 300 because the board members would have a hell of a task ahead of them. The only reason we haven't had a board in a while was because the FY-12 numbers took forever to get released and they didn't know how many spots they could fill. Lucky for us pilot didn't go down any!

I didn't realize they already had applications at the board. I thought that it opened up to send in the packages on the 25th of the June. Are those all applications from the board that was supposed to happen earlier this year?

Edit: Nevermind, I got the submission dates mixed up with AFOTS

I was basing my comment more on what I've read about the rest of the pipeline, but I appreciate your insider knowledge. I know for a fact that the NSS for API is gone right now, and that screams to me "we need pilots!" (even though it also applies to NFO's; but the additional info that I've read says NFO's not so much). Then again, the situation for the Navy by the time people from this board make it to Pensacola will be vastly different. Heck, I'm leaving for OCS this year and I can't imagine there being no NSS requirement by the time I get there.

Anyways, I wish you all good luck.

How do you think the this will all affect the "select to ship" timeframe? Do you think the fact that they are selecting less total people will make for a faster time between now and OCS? For those who are selected on this board, would you expect that they will be at OCS by this time next year?

It's kind of interesting that they're holding this board, because all I've been hearing for the last few months is how FY12 is full. Maybe they're getting started on FY13 early, but that seems unlikely to me. Perhaps millsra13 has some more information about this. My guess would be that they'll be filling out the last few class dates of FY12 (probably March - June). So far, the latest FY12 date that's been slotted is January, but a LOT of people are still waiting on FS letters. If those FS letters go out in the next few weeks, that should clear up a lot of information about the Navy's current manning requirements.

Yeah, my packet was submitted and sent to Millington for the cancelled April board and never got sent back to my recruiter. That 200 number is probably all April rollovers.

As far as the fy thing goes. Fall boards are actually primarily for the upcoming FY, not for current. Under normal situations fall boards would be selecting 10% of FY12 quotas and 33% of FY13 quotas. So hopefully that means one of two things, 1) August isn't the only board this fall or 2) selection numbers should actually be pretty high. Hoping for the second case myself. Gonna be bored silly if my MA is actually complete before OCS!
