Cross-country to airshow near your hometown?

I went to an air show at the first part of May in Central Texas where the headliners were the Aeroshell T-6 Texan acrobatics team and an F-16 from the Viper West Demonstration Team. What I really enjoyed however were the static displays of a legacy Hornet flown by a Naval Aviator and a T-34 flown by a Marine Corps IP and his student, (I think they came from Corpus Christi but I am not sure). The T-34 and the Hornet flew in within about 30 minutes of each other. The Hornet pilot was greeted by his friends and family when he got out of the jet after parking it on the ramp. I later found out he learned how to fly at a nearby flight school and his friends and family lived in a neighboring city. I met both of them briefly and it was good to actually have a fact-to-face chat with someone who is in a position I would like to be at in the future. That being said, I have several questions.

1: I was under the impression that it was kind of frowned upon to fly back to your hometown in a military jet as it may send the wrong type of impression as to what our war birds are used for. Am I mistaken? Either way, I thought it was kind of special to see the guy come back to the place he learned how to fly. I know if I ever got the opportunity to do that it would be a cool feeling to look at one side of the ramp at the Cessna I learned to fly on and then back at the aircraft I showed up in. The awesome aircraft I showed up in.

2: The aircraft themselves never flew for the air show, they were strictly just static displays. Even so, I would have expected that a crew would have come along with them to monitor the planes over night as it was at just a general aviation airport. In fact, the local guys at the FBO got instructions from someone to go refuel the Hornet and when pilot saw them approaching his jet he took off after them and grilled them for getting close to the thing. Is it normal for an Aviator to just show up at an airport and leave his jet unattended overnight. Obviously the things aren't fragile but I figured someone could mess one up if they wanted to. (I never actually saw him leave his jet overnight, I just assumed that he would, and considering it was there the next day I figured he stayed at a hotel)?

3: Were the Marine IP and his student on a X-country or what? I didn't expect to see a student pilot at an air show. Does that kind of thing happen a lot during flight training?

4: What's my chance of getting Jets out of flight school? (just kidding )

Disclaimer: I am not sure what model the Hornet was, I just know it was a single seat and not a Super Hornet. Also, If these questions are answered elsewhere or I come off as an idiot, flame away because I couldn't find the answers to them.

There is nothing wrong with flying back to your hometown. Flying down main street of your home town at 50 feet and several hundred knots, that will get you in trouble.

The conversation with a CO would probably go something like this:

JO Pilot:"Hey Skipper, there is an airshow at X airport just by my hometown, I need the hours and it's a secure field. I'll even stay the night at my mom's house, so I won't need any TAD $$ and it would get a good writeup in the local paper."
CO: "Don't do anything stupid, and bring my jet back on time in one piece. Make sure your momma sends a copy of the paper, and don't curse in front of the youngsters."

There was another Hornet at Lakeland this year that had pretty much the entire jet roped off and they wouldn't let anyone get close to any part of it. It was just a baby Hornet and the Shocker that was also there. I thought it was weird, as well, because I hadn't seen that at airshows previously, including two airshows in 2010 I flew into. Maybe something with the Wing and TRA (R).

It's not unheard of to bring studs to airshows. The getting there and the getting back are where they make their money, so what happens while you're there doesn't really matter as long as you aren't burned to a crisp and/or sober when you leave.

What you've probably heard about making trips to hometowns is "repeated trips" to hometowns. I have no idea what this means, but I've made repeated trips to my hometown under various conditions.. Another "gotcha" is making a trip to a city with a major sporting event. That's how it's worded. So if you have no intentions of going to the sporting event and just happen to be in the same town at the same time, apparently you're "wrong." This is usually where common sense prevails.

From tha' source (that's OPNAVINST 3710.7U, bobola):

3.1.2 Nonessential Flights
The use of aircraft for nonessential flights shall not be authorized. Any flight open to misinterpretation by the public shall be avoided. Examples of flights that are considered nonessential are as follows:

...

c. Repeated flights to the hometown area of flight personnel concerned.

What Bevo described above is what you could expect 99% of the time.

Now, if your hometown had an airshow every weekend, eyebrows would be raised.

When I was nearing the end of primary I did a cross country to Davenport, Iowa for an airshow and had a blast. There were two other T-34s that also showed up so it wasn't just me and the IP. I think we had to have one of the planes "open" for people to look around, and otherwise were free to wander around. I know they're fairly regular cross country destinations here in primary land.

Thanks for your responses. From a third party perspective, I am glad that you aviators get to enjoy the little perks of your job like that and I thought it was cool to see that guy fly in and his family greet him at the jet.

Ha! That's great! For some reason I found this conversation really funny.

Joking or no... there are people on this board who dont find the 'jet question' funny in the least bit. There have been guys who have been AW members a lot longer than you get put in the penalty box for making this joke.

Full disclosure, I don't give a rats ass. Just giving you fair warning.

Thank you for the warning. Also, what is the penalty box and why should I fear it?

I hope that satisfies anyone about to flame me and/or put me in the penalty box.
No one's after you. It's Pilot_man that is tempting faith. He's been around long enough to know the score.

OUCH. Talk about a Field Grade moment. :banghead_
Speaking of Field Grade moments... Is it because I'm getting older, or because I got promoted that I really don't like LLL nights as much as I used to? The term "Field Grade Moon" has meaning to me now.

Oh, and for what it's worth - it was a B-E-A-utiful night flying the mighty Battle Phrog last night. Clear and a billion, big moon, no problems with the bird... Not to rub it in at all there KBay...

1. You've gone Full Field Grade.
2. Remind me to kick you in the nuts next time I see you.

Yes!

That's great, I was secretly hoping somone from this forum would know the airshow I was talking about. How and why were you there all the way from Pensacola, FL? (If that is actually where you are located at)

Once you get through flight training and are qualified to fly your assigned aircraft, how often do you get to fly a cross country to X location of your 'choice' and stay there over the night/weekend?
