Flight suit redesign, what would you do?

Long time listener, first time caller.
While watching a bunch of non flying types standing around in their shiny new blueberry cammies a thought struck me. The DOD has seen fit to redesign just about every working uniform the armed services has, almost ad nauseum, some with great success (Marines) and some with hilarious looking failure (ABUs, just the name is an oxymoron). However, the military has done nothing to touch the old green flying bag, some of our fathers flew in the same uniform. I know it works, but you'd think they would at least redesign some aspects to fit each service or maybe each type of aircraft (rotors, fast movers, and props). The army has seemed to have mild success with their weird flying ACU thing, but the majority of us are still using the same green onesie. If you had the ability to, what would you change, would you individualize them based on service or airframe, change the color, add water wings, even a butt flap? I think its easy for most of the people who make these high level decisions to write off a need, because there seems to be a fair amount of contention around the flight suit (I mean after all they are taking away our patches and giving us air force issue black t-shirts, the price for having SWOs running the navy right now seemingly). Thoughts? Should we begin a petition?

Careful what you wish for, God knows what kind of abortion the Navy might dream up to replace something that ain't broke.

As an Army guy who has seen numerous flight suit changes I'd change nothing. Give the non-ejection seat types an option to wear a two-piece. It should be something all the branches agree on to cut back coast and leave it at that. It does NOT have to have some fancy Army, Navy or Air Force cammo pattern. Make it one color like the Navy Drifire two piece.

I happen to own one of the new, approved 2 piece flight suits and I have to say that it is awesome!!! Of course now that we finally have one, the uniform board or whatever that stupid thing is called now, has decided that as of October you can't wear anything but the green bag inconus. 2 steps back I tell ya.

We switched to the new "Air Force Flight Suit" (it's what we called it) back in the mid-90's. It was a 'fuller cut' through the midsection and had zippers on the sides, like pockets.

They were roundly panned by all of naval aviation and within 2 years we switched back to the 'old flight suits' which I was issued since 2001 and on.

Judging by old pics and some of the old guys at 'Hook, I'd say our bags have evolved somewhat from earlier eras (ie 1950's/60's/70's)....that or the ones I've seen have been custom made (certainly not unheard of)

Agree, and I don't understand why the Army can't just get one color flight gear, and not have 2 separate "fancy"camo pattern survival vests! I'm allowed to only wear one color "in country" and the other CONUS. Go with a single color across the board for the vests (USAF tan doesn't look bad) and 2 piece single color flight suits, no unit patches, just a nametag. Brings back memories in my HS squadron when we had low vis patches for the work week, color on Sundays!

If it ain't broke...

Or as my first det MO would say, "Shit, standby! Because the Navy will fix it till it's broke!". But he also laughed at our gator det's underway periods... "They only do 60 days underway at any given time. Damn, I could do 60 days with a dick in my eye!"

I concur with don't say a WORD, otherwise someone with a crow or star will hear and go ahead and turn flight suits into another uniform abortion.

I thought long and hard about this: I came to the conclusion that the one flight suit EVERY Naval Aviator would be most comfortable with (excepting the Blue Angels), Is the tailor-made "Blue Angel" bag! They are AWESOME! :icon_smil

I like the bag as it is. I just wish they didn't change the regs so we can't wear the desert ones inconus. I was one of the unlucky few that has gone through flight school without being allowed to wear the tan bags - per squadron SOPs. It sucks that I have two flight suits just hanging in the closet that I can't wear, but what can ya do?
