LITTLE KNOWN TIDBITS OF U.S. NAVAL HISTORY...

oldironsides.jpg

The U.S. S. Constitution (Old Ironsides),
as a combat vessel, carried 48,600 gallons of fresh water
for her crew of 475 officers and men.
This was sufficient to last
six months of sustained operations at sea.
She carried no evaporators
(i.e. fresh water distillers).

However, let it be noted
that according to her ship's log,
"On July 27, 1798, the U.S.S. Constitution sailed from Boston
with a full complement of 475 officers and men,
48,600 gallons of fresh water,
7,400 cannon shot,
11,600 pounds of black powder and
79,400 gallons of rum."

Her mission:
"To destroy and harass English shipping."

Making Jamaica on 6 October,
she took on 826 pounds of flour and
68,300 gallons of rum.

Then she headed for the
Azores ,
arriving there 12 November.
She provisioned with 550 pounds of beef and
64,300 gallons of Portuguese wine.
On 18 November, she set sail for England .
In the ensuing days
she defeated five British men-of-war and
captured and scuttled 12 English merchant ships,
salvaging only the rum
aboard each.

By 26 January,
her powder and shot were exhausted.
Nevertheless, although unarmed she made a night raid
up the Firth of
Clyde in Scotland .
Her landing party captured a
whisky distillery and transferred
40,000 gallons of single malt Scotch
aboard by dawn.
Then she headed home.

The U. S. S. Constitution
arrived in Boston on 20 February 1799,
with no cannon shot, no food, no powder,
no rum,
no wine,
no whisky,

and
38,600 gallons of water

GO NAVY !!!

It's a shame that these fantasies distract from the real exploits of Old Ironsides. Where shall we start... that Constitution was sent to sea to harass French and not English shipping? Or that she was in port until December (and therefore unable to make Jamaica in October) for repairs due to damage to her bowsprit.

I recommend for reading Six Frigates by Ian W. Toll.

'It's a shame' ... ???

So you don't like 'humor' ... ??? This was forwarded to me from a flyin' Bruddah who is a former Marine. He thought it 'funny' and I thought it 'funny' and worth putting up on the website. You know -- for a yuck or two. If you want 'history' ... why don't you post something historical ???

It's little wonder the Navy & you guys are so constipated these days ... and humorless, for good measure.

I'm looking at the red colored font and the rum consumption per hour. The rum must have had a secondary usage on board. I'm not confident 475 livers could successfully process that kind of volume. Apparently they had a different kind of morale suppression team back then.

Like I said: forwarded by a former Marine-Bruddah ... he's not a rocket scientist ... I mean, the guy's nightstand Bible is The Reader's Digest (condensed version).

But he is/was a good man to fly with ... :)

'scuse me, but is this not the humor forum? I think that was very funny, and it fits the character of some of the old Navy folk. Smile a little, or at least let us old goats smile a little.

Now now, gents, let's not get our panties all wadded up... The intent of my post was to put in a plug for a good Navy book. Call it SWO-appreciation reading. ;)

Ahhhhhh ... O.K. .... got it now.

You merely wanted to plug a 'good Navy book' on the part of the website forum that's entitled: AVIATION AND MILITARY HUMOR ...

AND HEY!!! Who wouldn't???

So in that same spirit, here's some 'military humor' for you:

Question: can you tell the difference???

Answer: neither can anyone else....

Ok, now I get it. SWO appreciation should be placed under Military Humor. I always have been slow on the uptake.

Hi A4's- I very much appreciate the humor of this thread. Keep the good stuff coming. I've had little to chuckle over lately and I could use more. You never did fly a fish ...did you?

Thanks.
