Hi, what does the Class 1 Flight Physical for the USMC consists of?

There is no "class 1" flight physical in the USMC. There's a long form and a short form. You get long forms upon getting into naval aviation and on birthdays divisible by 5(as in 25YO, 30YO, etc., not just because you were born May 5). All other years you get a short form.

On long forms, you get the full Monty, full op-check on all systems. Short forms are pretty quick--eye tests, audiograms, bloodwork, vitals, and a consult with a doctor.

FedDoc could give you all the particulars. Any particular exams you're concerned about?

Stupid question, but you mean around that birthday, right? Doesn't sound like a great way to spend your 30th...

You are due for your annual flight physical within your birth month. My birthday is in November, so anytime in November I can get my physical done so it doesn't expire.

Or in the month beforehand. My birthday is in December, got my last flight physical done the day before Thanksgiving. I actually recommend that date if your command is only granting the 96 for the weekend as medical was completely dead and I was done in about an hour.

I was just wondering what the exam was...I heard many people can't get the contract from PLC if they do not qualify...

It's a very thorough physical. The standards for many tests, like vision, are harder than in the outside world. Sometimes they find conditions that don't affect civilian life, but are disqualifying for aviation. For example, poor color vision or frequent headaches. There are dozens of disqualifiers--it's impossible to name all of them. On the other hand, a healthy adult, with no major medical conditions or mental illness will usually make it through.

Oh...thanks for the insight..I heard you can still fly if your eyesight is 20/40...is this true?

You can 'fly' with these:

The only question is: should you ... ???

You're missing a 0 up there. Doc makes sure I've still got two eyes at my physical, and checks my vision by turning the lights off. 20/400 in both eyes with a contact lens waiver. Whenever I can beg/borrow/cajole eye surgery from the chain of command, I'm doing it.

Unless there's sarcasm I'm not detecting, I'm pretty sure it's 20/40 and correctable to 20/20 or better. I've never seen 20/400 anywhere and how you get to fly with eyes like that is awesome...but unbelievable.

I'm blessed to still be running around with 20/10s, but the 20/40 is for initial accession. After that, your vision can go to hell, as long as it's correctable.

Thank God for the Contact Lens Waiver. Who knows where I'd be if it weren't for that thing.

Now. A couple years back they allowed a handful of candidates who wore contacts and corrected to 20/20.

Can you wear contact lenses in the jet? I've heard rumors of the lenses sliding down when you start bending the jet around---doesn't sound too fun.
