Any Regrets?

after going through parris island, and PLC JRS i often think, if i only woulda done such and such before i got here, i'd be so much more prepared...

for those who have gone through flight school and have earned their wings, and for those who are in flight school, if there was anything you could do before API and flight school to better prepare for it what would it be?

p.s. COLLEGE SUCKS AND ITS GONNA BE A LONG 3 YEARS BEFORE I GET MY COMMISSION... ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN GET SOME MOTIVATION?

Dude. I'm only at the beginning of the road...finishing API and a week away from heading to Corpus. All I can tell you is, thus far, even doing relatively unimpressive things compared with what's to come, I STILL can't believe I get paid to do what I do. I woke up today, went to a couple briefs in the morning, went and shot flares, and jumped in the bay afterward, and was back in my apt by 12:30 and ready to drink beer. Tomorrow is the Dunker. And on top of it, you get to proudly wear the uniform of the finest military in the world, and get saluted by these sailors and marines who look up to you. When and where else can you do this type of stuff and get paid to do it?

I didn't see life this way a year ago, but I'd do it a hundred times over to be where I am.

Answer your question?:D

BTW: I felt your pain as a BDCPer in college....languishing away waiting to get started. TRUST ME. It gets better...

I'm not sure there's a whole lot more you can do to prepare besides being familiar with what to expect and I guess flight time can always help some. I just went up on FAM 3 today and things seem like they're coming at a mile a minute. Just stay motivated and standby for the firehose. I'm convinced this barrage of knowledge will stop just about the time I'm ready to retire.

How can you hate college? Wow, that really blew my mind. What the hell do you do all day, sit in your room and look out the window wondering what goes on out there?

I regret being less of a man-whore than I could have been.

That, and I should have rushed/pledged Freshman year vice Sophomore.

There will be a lot of down time during/before flight school. Use it wisely. Be proactive about getting your books before, or shortly after, you check in. The common advice on here is to sit back and party before API starts. While there is a lot of wisdom in this, that means you'll be studying that extra hour every day, and every weekend while you're in training.
Same smell for primary and advanced. Get ahead of the game. Study in groups. Focus your efforts. For example, study the engine and related systems one day. Read the book, do the courseware, and actually go out to the plane and see how the hoses connect to different parts of the engine. The next day, look at the prop system. Spend a whole day on aero stuff. You get the point.
My regret pre-API was that I tried to study too broadly. I read all the books prior to starting classes, but retained almost nothing. Looking back, focusing on Aero, Weather, and Engines (in that order) would have been more beneficial.

I should have rushed instead of or in addition too playing lacrosse... would have saved me from a concussion that I should have kept my mouth shut about... but being in the greek system at ucsd is like
being in the special olympics... even if you win you're still retarded.

So in short my regret is talking about a concussion that was only documented by an athletic trainer... would recommend not doing that

Flight school will give plenty of rope to hang yourself or succeed. Just remember your priorities:
1. Work/Study (It's what you are getting paid to do)
2. Party/goof-off

I have that same regret.

Amen. I kept the same girlfriend for 2 years. I regret that.

To answer your question about advice for prepping for flight school. I would get some flight time. By no means do you need to get a license or anything, but a little stick time in a cessna couldn't hurt. Most show up to flight school without any time, but it helped me in my case.

I had about 30 hours or so before getting to flight school. Not enough where they would put on any accelerated program in primary, but enough so that I was at least comfortable in a plane and had seen the sight picture before. It also gave me a chance to fix my landings - I was really terrible when I first started in a Cessna. After about 15 hours the landings finally clicked and went well from there. Point is, I'm glad trial period happened as a civilian and not in primary. When I got to primary I actually got a lot of aboves for landings and it helped me get my first choice.

Like I said, plenty do fine without flight time. My roommate had 0 hours and he had identical grades to me. Our other roommate had 100 hours and didn't do so well grade wise.

How can anyone hate college? It's not real life and there are a plethora of young girls around. Combine them with alcohol and you have a good time.
