I'm curious, will the new AH-1Z Super Cobra open up more cobra slots or are we talking about modifying the existing Cobras and not necessarily expanding the community?

Also, do CH-46 or CH-53 pilots ever have the opportunity to transfer to attack helicopters? Which I would assume is the AH-1 only these days.

Thanks

There will be more Cobra slots but not necessarily due to the Zulu which seems to be delayed longer with each passing day. The increase will be due to the 2 maybe 3 more squadrons that will be standing up.
The Z was originally concieved as a rebuild of Ws but with the current demands on the airframes they will all be new builds.

There are some transitions but they are rare (almost nonexistant), right now there are 3 slots for any helo to become Huey guys but not Cobra guys.

to get back to the thread. There was a Z here a few weeks ago, pretty stinking cool piece of equipment. The guys that brought it down from Pax were saying that with both the Y and the Z said that it is going to start with a west coast squadron and go as a one for one trade for a N or W to a Y or Z with the Yankee coming first. Then once there is an entire squadron transitioned over they will go to another one. So just because it is coming doesn't mean that if you fly Hueys you WILL end up in a Yankee you might never fly one, same goes with the Zulu especially since it is still a few years out before it hits the fleet.

Everyone always asks about Cobras, never about Hueys? WTFO.

Seems like no one dreams of swooping down from a hundred feet with your precision rockets (using a highly accurate grease pencil on the window I mean) turning some terrorists hideout (or the buildings immediately surround it) into pink mist and rubble before picking up some casualties (sorry, one casualty) and speeding home...

Who am I kidding, everyone just pictures the Hueys struggling to make it past the hills surrounding the air station on Pendleton.

.

I remember as stucon O in HTs when we had a Huey draft one class. Something like 1/2 of the Marines got Hueys. Those guys left looking like I'd just pissed in their Wheaties. A week after that, the Wing OpsO, a Huey pilot, initiated a drive toward a quality spread for platform selection. It's in an odd place, psychologically. It's not enough of a shooter for the "ooh-rah" types, but the assault-types know that being a Huey pilot means you've got to work with the Cobra guys. And who wants THAT?:icon_wink
