I'm going to have around 20-25 hours, and will have been soloing for about 6weeks by the time I hit OCS. Would it be better to try and get through IFS faster and on to API, or take my time in IFS??

Also, is it possible to log flight time (toward my PPL) when on liberty at OCS? Are there any civilian schools around Newport? Or would this be a waste of time and money?

1. You will NOT want to study for flights on your precious liberty time.
2. You are (I am almost certain) prohibited from dangerous activities on the weekend, and this includes flying (AFAIK, civilian flying is a no-no in flight school too, or maybe requires an ORM brief).
3. Enjoy your free time and IFS. Flight school gets hectic enough later on. At this point, if you don't have the time to do it before OCS, Just relax.

Civilian flying is strictly prohibited during IFS. They have hour benchmarks (13.5 to solo, 25 to cross-country), and practicing "off the books" would be considered cheating.

If I have hit some of those bench marks before I get to IFS how does that factor in? Should I even bring it up? Or just expand what I know and clean up the rusty-ness of taking however many months off from flying?

Thanks for the info about civilian flying on liberty at OCS (what little liberty there may be). Just one less thing I have to think about.

Slight threadjack, but does anyone actually feel that IFS improves their ability in the T-34? I was under the impression that it does not, and this topic has come up a few times on here. My point of this is simply to state that if you don't need to (aka, per Navy rules) do IFS, then don't do it (having a PPL would be an example). It doesn't nor is designed to help you out in Primary.

I think the Navy is using IFS as more of a screening tool than a teaching tool.

I had my PPL and 80 hours before the Navy, and I don't think the civilian time helped me very much at all. My landings were pretty good (ie: no pants-shitting or IP intervention) in early FAMs and I am pretty comfortable on the radio, but other than that, I don't think the civvy time makes anyone better in the T-34. FAM 1 was as much of a helmet-fire for me as it is for the guy with the bare mins.

But then again, you've seen me fly. How scary was it, sir? :D
