Besides the girls, any idea what the Danger Area was supposed to be? Ironically enough, Horak is now on the edge of it, but I doubt that was around back then. .....
Dunno ... I remember an old guy -- a Chief -- saying "they" used to dive-bomb "out west" of Saufley .... ??? It looks like a possible boundary for a bombing range.

Interesting. I guess that makes sense. It's also interesting to see that Barin had a tower. That place must have been huge in its day. Even now, you can see more runway/ramp space on the west side of the road that's been long forgotten.

Man, WWII was an amazing time.

A 2006 photo by John Wienand of a Navy T-34C at Barin.

John observed, “There is always this one plane parked there. Someone gets to fly to work.”

It's not all that glamorous.

Guess I'm getting old, or just didn't hit it that much... I remember Evergreen, Brewton, and Saufley... Barin rings a bell, but I don't think I went there much, where is it - Area 3?

EDIT - I think it's coming back, Area 1 - next door to another OLF? One of them was closed, and you could only do low approaches, right?

Yup, Barin is just south of Summerdale which is closed and only for HAPL's and LAPL's, no touchdown.

I heard a rumor that Summerdale is going to be reopened and the runways extended when the T-6 comes to Whiting.

Ahh yes, it's all coming back - you'd fly between Summerdale and Barin to intercept the powerline slash at less than a 45 degree angle looking for the chicken ranch...

Had a near midair there on my solo, put my head down to switch to PNS Approach, NACWS never went off, looked up and another T-34 zorched over my left shoulder about 100 ft above me. Relatively embarrasing to go back and report that, and then proceed to get my ass chewed about relying on NACWS.

For a while, Summerdale was opening to take the load off Silverhill, but I'm guessing no one really liked that since there's no block house at Summerdale. It continues to stand ready, though, if needed. The word now is that Saufley will open back up and they'll "close" either Silverhill or Barin temporarily. There just isn't enough personnel to support three OLFs anymore.

In area three, there used to be Holley. I remember flying in there once when my IP was RDO and then we did weekend ops after. It's now closed as well and will probably never open.

I'm at the "CSO" campus in San Antonio for a second instructor tour. The Air Farce is planning to build two hangars, and if I remember correctly from the last brief a CSO dorm in P'cola. I believe the plan is to break ground after Oct 1st. The Navy should figure out a way to get some money out of the AF to make some upgrades for the NFOs too.

Holley and Saufley closed right when I started primary...right after Ivan. It was nice to not have to waste braincells on those course rules. The only time I ever saw saufley was when doing the VOR approach into PNS during HTs.

It was always interesting to think that Barin used to be as big as Whiting. East and West fields. It was also weird going up to ellyson Industrial Park to pay a water bill and seeing the old hangars, tower, Qs, and gas station. I never made it over to Bronson to check out the old sea plane ramps, and I would look for the remnants of Bagdad OLF, which apparently used to look like Spencer.

CSO dorm in P'cola

You have been around the AF too much. That would be a CSO barracks, or BOQ. If they do put up their own money to build housing in Pcola the Navy should retain naming rights, just like on the big stadiums and arenas. That way we can be assured it will be a proper military facility, a barracks, or BOQ.

The way I'm reading this, which is the glass half empty, is that the amount of "good deal instructor shore tours" are going to be gobbled up by those "good deal entire career" Air Farce pfffags. There is no way the AF is going to let us Navy types train their AF studs Navy style without letting more of their own instructors in there. Picture the glass now only a 1/4 empty, and that will eventually mean less fun and more 'rules.' Don't kid yourself, the AF training style is like a disease...It spreads hate and pain wherever it goes.

First post... but Im wondering if there is such a surplus... why arent they letting more guys out. I know a few guys in non 12R billets that would slit throats to be first in the VSP/FS line.
