P3's and EA-6 in Portland IAP

Hello there all you guys from Whidbey Island, I have been down at the PDX, OR airport the last couple nights working on the company aircraft and have been watching you guys shoot approaches. So I figured I would ask a couple of questions of you gentlemen.

Anyone on AW one of the guys flying in to PDX.

Second questions why is the EA-6 such a loud aircraft, is it something to do with the bypass ratio on the engines. compared to our local F-15's it seems quite a bit louder when you do your "missed" procedure.

Turbojet engines, not for the faint of heart.

They figured if they were going to station an aircraft in the Pacific Northwest, they might as well make it capable of causing the greatest amount of ass-pain to the local hippie set . . . :icon_tong

As mentioned, the J52 is a turbojet, thus no bypass. All noise.

Yeah, you gotta love the ignorant up in this part of the country, the base launches the alert birds for drills and all anyone can complain about is the noise.

I guess I didn't realize that the EA-6 is just a staight turbojet so that explains alot, does that effect your cruise burn numbers a whole lot?

I bet down in the weeds though it is nice to have nothing but power when you need it.

The A-4, A-6, and now .... *sniff* .... only the EA-6 ... collectively with their P/W J52 P-6's, P-8's, and P-408's ... always have been the "loudest" engines on the flight deck ...

.... it's the Sound of Freedom. Enjoy. :)

Performance is atrocious up high (30+), but it's a dream down low. Pointy-nosed folks always have to tap burner to keep up with us on a LL.

Just?? JUST ??? JUST a straight turbojet ???!!

Cruise burn and therefore planning used to be predictable
and a piece of cake ... for example:

Problem: you need to go from NUW to the SoCal Op Area for whatever ... go with a full bag of internal gas, two drops, climb out, go to the mid-30's ... max EGT until the low fuel light comes on ... look down .... there's NKX or NZY .... land. Go to the 'Q. Shit, shower, and shave ... pick up the rental car.

HEY!!! Let's go to Mex-Pac or Bully's!!! :D

Simple. Easy. Life was good .... it's all about planning. :)

Sorry I didn't mean it go sound that way I was not trying to knock your powerplant but was rather saying that with it being a staight forward turbojet it makes more sense about the sound.

My humble appoligies as a mere unknower on this specific Navy a/c.

I see that your plannig works much like ours in the AF except our is more like. Getting your deployment orders, have a party, kiss the wife, let the Navy get there a couple months before you then show up when the airconditioning is installed.

Wouldn't want to go to war uncivilized you know :D:tongue2_1

The fact of the matter is I have always been a fan of the A-6 series of aircraft and as my family is split down the middle half AF and half Navy. But when it came to my turn to fly unfortunately the A-6 was on the way out and I thought the EA-6 would follow so I went AF instead. Silly me thinking the Navy would get new planes what was I thinking.

And Navy guys wonder why I'm pledging some Air Guard units as well as doing the OCS application thing...

I was also told, by many a fellow Prowler flyer, that the bent tailpipes also had a lot to do with how loud we were. Not sure if that was urban legend or not but it sure sounded like a good explanation.........

Don't you have a scarf you need to put on for your Friday night soiree to the O'Club in your pressed flight suit?
