F-35B/C Lightning II (Joint Strike Fighter)

With the Marines eventually transitioning all AV-8s, F-18A-Ds, and EA-6Bs to the F-35B, what will become of Marine aviation off the CVNs? Wouldn't this cause a gap in CVWs?

Or will they keep a few18C squadrons to fill this out past 2019 as the ppt indicates?

Shame to see the USMC NFO community disappear.

It is disappearing. One of my classmates from API just started Primary and he's been talking about how weird it is to be one of the last Marine NFOs.

He's not 'one of the last,' by a long shot. The community is shrinking, yes, but they'll still be making Prowler ECMOs and -18D WSO's for a good while yet.

Tell your friend to stop staring off into the distance with misty eyes, talking about how great Things Used to Be.

I hope they come out with a 2 seat variant...

There is no plan to do so right now. It may come later but right now the only thing it would do is add to the development costs, which would be a bad thing.

I believe the last Marine NFO's are planned to be winged in 2015/6, with a phase out date of the Prowler in 2018. Fester is right in that he has a few years before he becomes endangered and can talk about 'the good old days'.

Fair enough. He made it sound like it was much more immediate, not seven years hence. Thanks for the correction!

If he sticks around long enough he may be one of the last Marine NFOs, but he won't be one of the last to become a Marine NFO.

Liked that, did you? ;)

I, for one, am not going to be party to the destruction of the English language. It bugs me when people can't spare the extra few seconds to spell a word correctly or write a sentence with proper grammar (or at least attempt to do so).

D_rob and I saw the first "C" being built while on a tour of the LM Ft Worth plant last winter, en route to Meridian. Cool jet, and that plant has probably more expensive shit per square inch than anything else I can think of.

If plans are to replace the Yuma harriers first, how will the transitions affect pilots at different stations? I would like to be in on the change when it happens, but if I get stationed at Cherry Point or Miramar, would that be a factor that might influence the transition? I am pretty clueless on the whole transition process, and was hoping one of the Osprey guys can chime in.

On a side note, would I be able to change coasts between flying tours? I asked somebody once, and they said that it was pretty tough to do because you had to switch through the MEF or something to that matter. It was a while ago, and the guy had been out of a fleet squadron for a while, so I don't know if things have changed.

My roommate here at TBS was told that he was one of the last Marine SNFOs to go through the BOC. MCRC isn't recruiting anymore....
