Having trouble chosing a MOS

Hi,

I just joined the Marines and am in the DEP. My Problem is that I don't know what MOS to chose as I'm not sure what the duties of each are. I believe I'm interested in something that has to do with criminal justice - since I have a BS in it. I'm also interested in using my language skills - i read write and speak Arabic and I'm also interested in the social services field! I know it'a a tall order, but can anyone give me some input on what MOS(s) out there might be a good fit? I'm not interested in a desk job!

Thanks!

Why did you not go for an officer program?

I am just waiting for the horror story of what your recruiter told you.

"Dear Mr. Tee,

My recruiter said that I had to enlist first before I could become an officer and that my bachelor's degree and language skills would be very good for when I'm eligible to apply. Mr. Tee, do you think I made a mistake? Did my recruiter lie to me?

Thanks.

p.s. Oooraahh!"

duniadulab, check your PM's. while you're in USMC dep (not sure how long you have left), if you drop a USMC OCS packet and get selected before your ship date, you ought to be good to go. best wishes either way.

It is NOT too Late to talk to an OSO. You can try to compete to be an officer before entering the Marines.

Your story may be different (may not qualify to be an officer i.e. citizenship or some other X Factor)

With that said, use your language skills - will get extra money for this. Look to work in the intel field or be a Interpreter. If you are as fluent as you say it doesn't matter what your MOS is, a Lcpl who is fluent in Arabic will be at a LtCol through General's Terp.

Find and MOS that will give you a trade skill. Cartography, Weather, Computer Data/information systems. As a lower enlisted, get a trade and if you want to do Grunt work, you will always be afforded to work guard duty or QRF.

I had a LCpl working for me in Iwakuni who already had his degree (BS in Agricultural Sciences or some crap from UF). He was told by his recruiter that an Officer package he submitted would not be competitive unless he enlisted and then applied. Whether or not the recruiter told him exactly that, I don't know. But I do know that he was accepted for ECP as soon as he had enough time to take a tactical pause and write his package up. He departed for OCS shortly thereafter, and I heard neither hide nor hair of him until last December, when I had to salute him out at Desert Talon.

The bottom line is, do your research and seek out all possibilities that are available to you. Otherwise, you might be delayed along or altogether denied a favorable path.

I wasn't implying that his degree was crap, or that he went to a crap school. Just using a euphamism to display that I cannot, in fact, remember what his precise major was. I'm sure that UF's animal husbandry and hay baling courses are top-notch, and that the agricultural sciences produces the very finest graduates. Just don't expect me to NOT block out conversations regarding the proper way to inseminate livestock.

No problemo. Just so long as you don't expect me to be able to distinguish the difference b/t a typical Marine and an intelligent one. :D

Being a realist, you'll notice that I've never claimed at any time to be intelligent. I thought that was the point I was making? Not to mention the quality reference I was making.

Anyway, does anyone want to buy a bike? I--er, FOUND one in Iwakuni a while back...
