Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

Completely misses the point on all marks. Nobody’s disputing the V-22 brings capabilities to the table nothing else can.

The problem is 1 in 1.5 million flight hours across the enterprise, the plane literally just kills you in a matter of seconds and there’s nothing you could have done about it. For enough people, that has become unacceptable risk.
I don't necessarily want to spark a debate on this subject, but who the fuck thought writing this article was a good idea? It could have been written 25 to 30 years ago.

Paraphrasing, but the author mentions something to the effect of "and with tanker support the range is unlimited".

Wow, that's a ground-breaking concept.

Very random question. What is the deal with the trailing edge flaps on the Harrier? The inboard flaps look like they are damn near 90 degrees down in the takeoff/landing configuration. How is that beneficial for forward flight?

In 2021, the 3d MAW CG (who is now the Assistant Commandant) banned going to Imperial, too. Basically a crew PEL'd there, and for whatever reason some folks at HQMC or on the Hill were like, "Well why didn't he just go to El Centro???" The CG, being a jet guy, didn't understand why we'd want to go someplace that does expeditious hot fuel and gives us pizza. All it took was approximately 50 ASAPs about lost training due to delays at the El Centro pits (a legitimate issue; those guys are slow as hell) for that ban to be rescinded.
Ah I love me some passive aggressive ASAPs…..

We have had on-going radio issues at work since June and getting Mx to do anything about it has been a lesson in frustration. I've been trying to get the crews to utilize my company's reporting system, but most just haven't experienced the power of weaponizing a safety report.

I know I could pay for it myself, but I haven't had issue with FSS either.

Dumb question for the group...how do you even file with FSS in the air anymore under the ICAO format? Do you have to have all of the extraneous weirdo codes, or can you just still state /G (or whatever)? Do you just follow the same basic old format? I have filled out exactly one (1) ICAO flight plan in HIGS and haven't used a FSS to file in years, so I don't know how they ask the questions anymore.

Recently *attempted* to show a PPL student how to file a VFR flight plan over the phone with FSS via 1800WXBRIEF and it was a abomination. The "FSS Specialist" was little help with the required ICAO equipment codes. We figured it out by opening Foreflight.

Foreflight is so much more efficient than any other filing method. Hell, 3710 even got updated to “officially” allow it for filing purposes and as an authorized replacement for a DD175-1. Can’t tell you the last time I even logged into flight weather briefer.

Anything else is simply archaic and unnecessarily cumbersome. It’s hard to justify not using a system that takes about 30 seconds to file and brief when every other alternative sucks.

I was going to past something about FF but I thought it would be off topic. That said, in FF you can easily file in flight. All your codes and such are pre-set by you, the owner.

Yeah I’m sure VMM squadrons running through Imperial for hot gas with expendables still loaded in buckets, ordnance still in the guns, engines melting the deck, or a CH-53E catching fire on the airfield had nothing to do with it… Some of which you may or may not have known…

…but also NAF El Centro should be MCAF El Centro with the amount of traffic 3rd MAW puts through that place compared to the USN. Not exactly a user friendly base from my experience.

Not sure if you guys drop into miramar, but do you ever use the "octagon" hot pits there? I can't remember if I ever saw any RW fueling there or not

It’s been a hot minute, but unless you were attached to MEU Squadron we typically avoided the Battle of Britain that rages daily over Miramar between MAG-11 and MAG-16. Shot an approach there once, got vectored/dicked around for 30-35 min in the GCA box, got pissed, and never went back.

When I was there, IIRC it was primarily RW/TR that used the octagon. I don't recall FW using it much, or at all.

That's probably similar to how we viewed the Pendleton training areas during HLL (more so when the phrog and H-1 FRS's were both at NFG).

Let's go head to LZ Bull, then get some pizza on the way back. 😆

Just keep in mind not everyone can legally do that.
